1600-1681, Spanish dramatist, last major figure of the GOLDEN
AGE. He wrote more than 100 plays, including
70 autos sacramentales (one-act religious plays) for the Corpus Christi
festival; cloak-and-dagger thrillers; and
comedies of manners like The Mayor of Zalamea (c.1640). His philosophical
drama Life Is a Dream (1635)
is considered a masterpiece.
