John Cheever

1912-82, American author; b. Quincy, Mass. A moralist whose works are often comic or surreal, he wrote about
America's affluent suburbs, e.g., The Wapshot Chronicle (1957) and Oh What A Paradise It Seems
(1982). Many of his stories are in The Stories of John Cheever (1978; Pulitzer), and selections from his journals
were published posthumously in The Journals of John Cheever (1991).
