Noam Chomsky

1928-, American linguist; b. Philadelphia. His theory of generative grammar, first proposed in Syntactic
Structures (1957), revolutionized the study of language (see LINGUISTICS; TRANSFORMATIONAL-GENERATIVE GRAMMAR). He posits innate structures, not minimal sounds, as the basis for speech. He has written numerous linguistic works, e.g., Reflections on Language (1975), and books
on current politics, e.g., The Washington Connection and Third World Fascism (1979), with Edward S. Herman.
