COURSE DESCRIPTION

This course offers an in-depth study of the more problematic aspects of Spanish grammar for English speakers, vocabulary building through a variety of readings and exercises, and numerous writing activities. It is designed to prepare students for writing grammatically correct essays in upper-division Spanish classes on Literature, Linguistics, Technology and Culture.
The course employs readings from literary and periodical sources that provide context for:
the study of grammar and for the writing of compositions.
Assignments focus on improving written expression by clarifying points of grammar and introducing vocabulary and phrasing in Spanish.  A good point to remember is that the Spanish language evolved from Latin, not English.
Latin is a sophisticated language with a great many subtleties of expression that are not found in English.
Therefore, translating from English in order to communicate in Spanish works at only a very basic level of communication.
Spanish grammar and phrasing must be actively assimilated in order to achieve acceptable expression in written Spanish.  Mastery of Spanish grammar cannot be achieved in a one-semester course.  Students will continue to concentrate on  differences between the pretérito and the imperfecto, the use of ser and estar, por and para,
and the subjunctive mood.  This is natural, since none of these distinctions exists in English.
This course can provide a perfect understanding of the difficulties inherent in these distinctions, but practice, diligence, and ultimately a long-term commitment to learning Spanish is required for written and oral fluency.
Good grammatical explanations are given in the book.  Class time will be devoted to reviewing the exercises prepared previously. It is therefore essential that each student read, study and prepare in advance the material assigned for each class day.
As there is plenty of time allotted to free conversation in Spanish, it is the language of instruction
for all upper-division classes.
Class discussion, readings, assignments, and tests are all in Spanish.
Improvement in writing requires a great amount of practice and attention to detail. Grammatically correct expression may be of lesser import in oral communication, but it is essential in writing and is the main focus of this course.  Learning to write correctly will engage you in time and effort and you will need to spend at leasat 1 hour every day of the week working on your Spanish in order to achieve the excellence we all are striving for at UT.

GRADING SYSTEM

The final grade will be determined as follows: Compositions (35%), Tests (35%), Final Exam (15%), Homework (9%), Attendance (6%).   UT recognizes five grades for reporting purposes: A (excellent), B (above average), C (average), D (pass), and F (failure).  In the evaluation of coursework additional grades may be used.  These will be based on a 100-point scale and are symbolized by A (93-100), A- (90-92), B+ (87-89), B (83-86), B- (80-82), C+ (77-79), C (73-76), C- (70-72), D+ (67-69), D (63-66), D- (60-62), F (below 60).  In reporting final grades, A or A- will be reported as A; B+, B, or B- will be reported as B, etc.

Compositions: 500 words, which generally means 2 double-spaced typed pages. For each composition, you have to provide a title, and divide the text into paragraphs, as well as use written accents and correct punctuation  (periods, commas, etc.).  It is assumed that all compositions will make sense as well as make a point.  Grades for compositions will be based on the correctness of its grammatical expression.

8 compositions will be assigned.
For the first 7, there are due dates for each primera redacción and segunda redacción. 1R & 2R
The purpose of writing and turning in a primera redacción (1R) is for the instructor to indicate to you errors and weak points for your consideration and subsequent correction.
Some compositions may be so well written that the instructor corrects only the first paragraph and indicates that the entire piece can be handed in.  The student should take this as a sign that their work does  meet the passing standard.
The primera redacción is not a first draft; it is a final draft that is not graded.  The grade from the composition will come from the segunda redacción.  Both redacciones will be identical in content, with the exception of emendations made in accordance with the indications for improvement from the instructor, class mates, second and third reading, spell-check with the recommended software, etc.
The segunda redacción will be turned in with the primera.
No composition will be accepted after the due date.

Tests:  A total of 8 tests will be given.
The test will include a brief writing exercise based on the Lectura,
grammar and any vocabulary or phrasing emphasized by your instructor or the books.

The final exam will not include a writing exercise, but will be based on the grammar covered over the course of the semester.

Homework:
Homework will be assigned every day and will be corrected in class, where active participation is expected. Please have a red pen ready to correct your work.
Homework assignments are indicated clearly in the syllabus and include both the pages to be studied and the exercises to be written out.
Be sure to come to class prepared.
Homework will be collected daily and will not be accepted late.
All homework for a given chapter must be turned in on time for any credit to be given.
For each chapter that is not complete, 1 point will be deducted from the final grade (100-point scale).

Attendance:
Regular class attendance and participation are required for successful completion of the course.  For each absence 1 point will de deducted from your final grade (100-point scale), up to a maximum of 6 points.
