The Home Page
The Main Menu, or Home Page, provides your initial access to Britannica CD. Through the Home Page, you can access the search options and links to other databases. From this screen, you can also search the databases by using the Query Box. Hotlinks at the top of the page provide additional information on Help and How To Search.
Query Box
The Query Box is where you enter a search query in the form of a word, phrase, or question. For example, if you are interested in Beatrix Potter's Peter Rabbit,
you can type rabbit beatrix potter, or peter rabbit to retrieve this information.
Select References
The Select References list is where you select which database
you wish to search. Your database choices include
the Articles, Index, or Merriam-Webster's Collegiate Dictionary.
Display a List of Articles
In this field, you can select the number of articles to be displayed. This feature allows you to view a small number of articles, especially when your initial search retrieves a large number of candidates. The default setting for this field is 10 articles.
Display the First Paragraph of Articles
This field allows you to select the number of articles for which the first paragraph or first 300 characters is displayed. The default setting for this field is all articles.
Browsable References
This field enables you to select the Propædia and Nations of the World databases for browsing. Please note that these databases are not searchable, but may be browsed from tables of contents.
Random Selections
These options allow you to select a random article or random image from Britannica CD.
Exiting the program
To leave Britannica CD, pull down the File menu and choose Exit. You can press Alt + F4 to close the application at any
time.
