VIRAL GASTROENTERITIS RESEARCH GROUP

INTRODUCTION

The Viral Gastroenteritis Research Group carries out its work in the laboratory of the Department of Microbiology at the School of Medicine and Dentistry of the University of Valencia, in close collaboration with the Clinical Microbiology Service at the Hospital Clínico Universitario.

Our main interests are in pathogenic viruses that infect the gastrointestinal tract, with specific emphasis on rotavirus and norovirus. Our main goal is to analyse their molecular mechanisms of pathogenesis and  the viral determinants of immune responses.

Rotaviruses are the main cause of viral gastroenteritis in children. Noroviruses affect people of all ages and are often responsible of gastroenteritis outbreaks.

We examine the immune mechanisms of protection against these infections, as well as the molecular determinants of susceptibility to these viruses.
