Overview

La Nau Cultural Centre of Valencia University hosts, for the second time, the photojournalism exhibition Fragments of a year, organised by the Union of Valencian Journalists. Covering the most remarkable events in recent months, the 9th edition of the show includes 106 snapshots by 29 professionals in the area of graphic journalism, making up the most recent memory of Valencian life.

The exhibition begins with one of the most eagerly awaited events in recent years: the arrival of the high-speed train in Valencia. Apart from its social and economic relevance, this news also illustrates the complex relationship between the central and the regional governments. This conflict is used by the exhibition as a thread to address other key events in the year, such as the Cabanyal dispute, the Coast Act or the nuclear waste repository.

The economic crisis and its effects on society or unusual scenes in the city’s everyday life complete, together with sports, an extensive review of current affairs in the months before the elections, also reflected by the photographs of the main players of the political battle.

With this new edition of Fragments of a year, the Union of Valencian Journalists strengthen their commitment to photojournalism and professional freedom to report on the things that happen around us. Trusting an institution that is key in terms of liberties and free circulation of ideas and thoughts such as the University of Valencia is one more sign of the will to continue standing up for freedom of expression of a journalistic organisation that faces challenges in their profession.
