Within the framework of PhotOn 2013 (3rd
International Photojournalism Festival), Crisi/Crisis
is a choral proposal by a wide selection of
photojournalists. It addresses current conflicts caused
by another dictatorship, that of the financial system
and the ‘fearsome' markets. Though its early signs were
seen in Greece, in recent years the deep economic crisis
has spread and aggravated in western countries. Weaker
economies like those of Greece, Spain and Portugal
finally fell prey to greedy banks. Political power is
showing its loyalty to economic power, subjugating
people to tough cutback schemes –camouflaged by the
austerity euphemism– that violate basic rights like
health, education, social services, etc. Faced with the
daily tragedy of unemployment, political corruption,
eviction and cutbacks, anonymous citizens cannot but put
up a fight, socially and in the streets. The exhibition
seeks to portray the crisis by gathering together those
who played a leading role in it in recent years, with
testimonies of the sinking of the principles and values
of today’s society.
