In his exhibition “Consumerism and neglect. Man’s impact
on the environment”, the photographer Emilio Andrés
Codina presents the consequences of excessive
consumption. Consisting of a 25-image series, including
two large diptychs (140 cm wide 100 cm high), the show
is intended to encourage viewers to think about today’s
lifestyles. The snapshots were taken on the Salton Sea,
in California, US. The Salton Sea is said to be the most
polluted lake in the whole country. Sewage water and
industrial waste coming from nearby towns have caused
the site to decline. It has been neglected and
abandoned, dirty fish and desolate scenery
counterbalancing the idyllic “American dream”. |

The exhibition is the result of the work completed by
the Master’s in Photography of the school Espai d'Art
Fotogrŕfic, of Valencia. During the academic year,
students carry out a photographic project based on a
specific subject; “Human activity: Machinery, Diet and
Environment” was the topic this year. All the series
taken under the master’s are supervised by the school
principal, Nicolás Llorens, and the international
photographer Philipp Scholz Rittermann. The master’s
main goal is to complete a professional, artistic and
personal project to help students enter the professional
market with support from Espai d'Art Fotográfic.
From all the projects, a jury of experts selected the
works of Emilio Andrés Codina for the Espai d'Art
Fotogrŕfic prize, i.e. a monographic publication and
an exhibition to be held at the premises of the Martínez
Guerricabeitia Trust, at La Nau Cultural Centre
(University of Valencia). The members of the jury are
Prof. Francesc Vera (photography lecturer, Fine Arts
School of the Polytechnic University of Valencia), Prof.
Román de la Calle (PhD in Aesthetics and Arts Theory,
University of Valencia) and Tomás Llorens (art critic). |
