Rosa Torres’ pictorial language is most characteristic, with a remarkable self-demand to reduce images to the minimum. She so accomplishes in a brilliant way in her landscapes, in some sort of image deconstruction which is very typical of her.

In this exhibition, Rosa Torres pays special attention to the language of the hinterland: the woods and the mountains, the essence of Mediterranean nature being reduced to just a few brushstrokes of colour. This view –her reduction of the reduction- is also applied to her interpretation of some urban gardens as a step further in the analysis of nature.

Whichever the case, the outcome is a number of chromatically powerful works in which compositional balance is thoroughly studied and the archetype of our nature skilfully captured. The aim is to transcend the scenery: to sublimate it and reduce it into a shape with basic colours, but without missing out on its intrinsic truth. In lacking the superfluous, the masses are filled with contents and wisdom.

The exhibition presents almost 30 large paintings, many of them from the 1980s. Some of them were shown in Venice Biennial but the majority have never been exhibited. A great deal of the paintings was actually stored at the basement of Zen, Madrid’s well-known art gallery.

60 sketches are also included, illustrating Rosa Torres’ preliminary confrontation with the canvas. Her work is really suggestive and the use of small drawing formats adds new agility and versatility, regardless of the final work. Visitors will see the steps she takes in her artistic creation, with all the preparation drawings behind the canvas.

The ultimate goal of the exhibition is to spread a significant part of Rosa Torres' works, unpublished to date: those of the period between the 1980s and today.

The catalogue includes reviews by J.F. Yvars, Alfonso de la Torre, Romŕ de la Calle and Francesc Miralles, and an introduction by Martí Domínguez.
