Gandia’s Summer UniversityThis
cultural project has been jointly developed by Universitat de València
and Gender studies.This section has been used as a cooperation framework between Gandia’s Summer University and the Women's University Institute in which gender studies have a permanent presence (women's problems, reflections, and specific perspectives). Watch centre: technological impact on society. It aims to become a discussion forum within Universitat de València and to study the contribution of technology to today's society, particularly the direct effects upon society as a whole: on health, physical and mental disability, or sports. Alfons Cucó Professorship for European political reflection. Set up in October 2002 within Gandia`s Summer University with a view to paying tribute to the distinguished professor from Universitat de València Dr. Cucó. Its aims are to delve into the research lines he developed and to foster discussion among the specialists, thus becoming a permanent political and intellectual forum.
The Philharmonic Orchestra of Universitat de València and València’s University ChoirOf an amateur nature and mostly made up of students, both the orchestra and the choir focus on music interpretation from the educational viewpoint. Set up in 1947, the Choir of Universitat de València is the
oldest in Spain. Its conductor is Josep Ramon Gil-Tàrrega. It
has 100 mixed voices and rehearsals are held twice a week from September
to June. Auditions are held the first fortnight in October and no previous
music knowledge is requested. The symphonic Orchestra has 70 musicians under the age of 27 and is conducted by Cristóbal Soler. A rehearsal is held on a weekly basis from September to June. Auditions are held in October, and at least intermediate grade music studies are requested. The members of this group receive financial help for their music education, optional credits, pedagogy and music training, and they are also promoted as solo musicians in chamber concerts. The creation of chamber groups is also encouraged. The Music Activity Trust (General Foundation of Universitat de València) manages activities with both the orchestra and the choir. La Nau Choir SchoolLa Nau Choir School was set up in October 2001 as a new project of the Music Activity Trust bringing together children aged from 4 to 14. The group rehearses every Wednesday from October to June. The School’s main target is to use songs as a basic element in structuring quality music education, and bring children and young people close to music. Enrolment is open throughout the academic year, provided there are vacancies. Enrolment is free and the pre-enrolment order sets the priority of the applicants. The children of the members of the university community and Universitat Former Students and Friends benefit from a 20 % discount. Theatre, poetry, cinema, music, and debatesDrama Club. Shows are staged at Hall Matilde Salvador (La Nau building). Theoretical/practical drama courses, workshops, and seminars are organised at the Palmireno Room.
Music club. Organisation and coordination of music activities (concerts, courses, workshops, etc.) taking place in Universitat.A concert cycle will be held in academic year 2004-2205, with concerts taking place every Wednesday at the university chapel at La Nau. Poetry Club.This club develops and encourages poetry reading and writing in Universitat. It organises presentations, poem readings, and discussions with young poets and poets with recognition. Debating Club. Lectures and round tables about current issues and matters of social and academic interest are organised. Well-known personalities of the national and international social, political, economic and academic spheres participate in the different thematic cycles organised.
Martínez Guerricabeitia TrustDependent on the General Foundation of Universitat, The Special Trust Martínez Guerricabeitia was created with the aim of promoting creative activities in plastic arts or any other art expressions among the university community. The donation by Jesús A. Martínez Guerricabeitia and his wife in July 1999 largely increased the contemporary art collection of Universitat de València in a significant way. The collection encompasses over 100 paintings and 300 graphic pieces with a remarkable social content. Some works are noteworthy: Anzo, Arroyo, Canogar, Equipo Crónica, Genovés, Villalba i Vostell, among others. For exhibition purposes –one of the most relevant 20th century collections owned by a Spanish university- the Trust has a dedicated exhibition room, the Martínez Guerricabeitia Hall, on Universitat Street. The Foundation manages and disseminates the collection with a view to raising an interest in contemporary art amongst university members and for the institution to open its doors to critical creativeness. The Trust also grants awards. In order to accomplish this target,
economic funds allowed for, with an annual contribution by Mr. Jesús
A. Martínez Guerricabeitia and additional contributions made
after the signing of the institution's protocol. The Trust organises
the Martínez Guerricabeitia Biennale, an exhibition of a small
number of art pieces selected by Each year the Martínez Guerricabeitia Trust broadens the range of activities. In this respect, the emphasis is not only placed on the preservation, exhibition, and research on their own collections but also on the in-depth analysis of today’s art. The Trust also organises optional credit courses on art, politics and thought, and documentation and research applied to humanities. The courses are targeted at students of history of art or related disciplines.
