Staff Development

The Objective of the Staff Development Service is to provide the staff of University of Valencia and teachers from all educational levels with on-going training, and ensure the continuity between initial and on-going training. More specifically, the service acts as the coordination means between University of Valencia and non-university educational instances as far as staff development and education research are concerned.

Quality and Development of Higher Education. It has three independent areas:

aula- Detection of needs and aspects related to university education quality. Analyses of specific variables are carried out from the perspective of the different degrees to assess education quality; the recommendations in the annual lecturer evaluation report prepared by the Universitat's Evaluation Commission are also studied.

- Lecturer initial training. The basic goal is to make lecturers, in particular recently employed ones, familiar with the structure and culture of Universitat and university education aspects.

- Lecturer ongoing training. This training is addressed to Universitat lecturers and aims at providing them with training and information in order to enhance their teaching. It includes both face-to-face courses and specific distance courses through the web.

Ongoing training for Universitat service and administration staff Its mission is to design and develop a training supply aimed at improving the professional skills of the administration staff and achieving higher quality standards, fostering their professional development and promotion prospects.

Coordination and training of teachers of infant, primary, and adult education. This section designs and offers a training supply to meet the needs for scientific and pedagogical upgrade of teachers of infant, primary, and adult education teachers. They also disseminate among the teacher community the results of educational research conducted at Universitat and non-university centres.

COU and Access Tests Coordination. Its objective is three-fold: coordinate the initial training of secondary education teachers, establish the necessary coordination links between Universitat and the secondary level, and design a training supply for the scientific and pedagogical upgrade of secondary education teachers. Together with the Student Service, this section organises the university access tests.

Occupational health and safety and environmental quality

The Department of Health, Safety, and Environmental Quality was set up with a view to achieving coherence between health and safety activities and the institutional environmental policy.

healthHealth and Safety encompasses all human and material resources needed for the development of actions guaranteeing the safety and health of the Universitat staff. The department also advises and supports the university community in promoting a prevention culture.

University of Valencia integrates all the legally established specialties: health surveillance and control, occupational safety, industrial hygiene and ergonomics, and applied psychosociology. These disciplines are developed by specialised professionals who work in a coordinated way.

As far as health surveillance and control are regarded, a number of Occupational Health departments based at each campus take preventative actions to ensure the health of the university community, and provide care in cases of common disease, vaccination campaigns, training and information schemes, etc.

Students under 28 not holding a social security card are entitled to school insurance, which covers the medical, pharmaceutical, and rehabilitation care in accidents related to school activities. Aid is also foreseen for students suffering a family misfortune. The enrolment fee includes a small amount for the school insurance.

As to the Environment Area, the Department of Safety, Health, and Environmental Quality fosters and coordinates all types of initiatives causing University of Valencia to ponder about its environmental position and to act accordingly in its various roles as the educator of future professionals, as a research centre, a consumer of goods and services, the owner of buildings, gardens, and land, the disseminator of knowledge in society, and a social referent and example.

An Advisory Commission for the Environment has been created to study the repercussions of the environment on education at all levels (degrees, post-graduate studies), departmental research, and staff development in Universitat.

Information Systems DepartmentInformation Systems Department

The Information Systems Department includes all human and material resources made available to the different university groups.

Its mission is to run, maintain, and upgrade computer resources so that the managers, administrators, lecturers, and researchers of UV can be supported adequately. The Service has recently installed a double-ring dark fibre network to interconnect the three campuses (Burjassot, Blasco Ibáñez, Tarongers) and the Nau building. The system ensures 10 Gbits/s interconnectivity using the university's resources, not having to use external links. This new installation makes University of Valencia the first European university to enjoy these networking facilities with a band width 70 times greater than the current one.

Quality and evaluation

The Education Evaluation and Diagnosis Office (GADE) is responsible for the management of the different quality assessment and improvement processes to which University of Valencia is committed.

Evalution in our university does not only involve teaching; it involves the whole of the institution. In recent years, quality assessment in universities has become a priority in the European university policy. University of Valencia is not unfamiliar with this approach. For some time now, a broad and complex evaluation process has been implemented with a view to improving the quality of education and research, and the management of the services. Specifically, GADE carries out its tasks in different areas:

estadistica- Institutional assessment. The main goal is to promote evaluation processes favouring the ongoing improvement of higher education. UV’s interest in improving has caused it to cooperate with the National Agency for Quality and Accreditation Evaluation (ANECA). GADE coordinates and offers technical support to the degrees participating in this process.

- Accreditation programme. In this programme, University of Valencia cooperates with ANECA to ensure all studies leading to an official qualification in Spain meet the quality standards. In this regard, GADE works with the different qualifications to prepare the future accreditation processes.

PAMRA (Academic performance evaluation and improvement plan). This pan is being developed by University of Valencia. Its goal is to analyse the academic performance of 1st year students to make improvements in the degrees.

- Quality evaluation plan for doctorate programmes. Its objective is to improve the programmes at different stages: education, research, and dissertation.

- Education evaluation in the 1st and 2nd cycles. A few years ago, University of Valencia decided to evaluate its teaching. Laid out in the Statutes, this initiative for the improvement of teaching quality was indeed a pioneering one in Spain. The assessment also means evaluating lecturers. The assessment helps lecturers improve performance, and provides them with data, opinions, and suggestions relative to teaching. Emphasis is also placed on administrative decision-making: contract types, stability, salaries, etc.

At present the assessment of education relies on different information sources: students, lecturers themselves, and departments. Specific instruments are used for each source, with different but complementary objectives.

- Post-graduate course evaluation. Jointly with the University-Business Foundation ADEIT, a yearly post-graduate course review is conducted (master courses, diplomas, certificates, etc.) based on the students' evaluation.

- University extension course evaluation. The University Extension Service is assisted by GADE in reviewing all the courses in their different programmes. In addition to the above processes, the Education Evaluation and Diagnosis Office takes more specific or time-scheduled actions, e.g. university graduate follow-up, assistance to evaluate Staff Development courses for the administration personnel of Universitat, etc. It must be noted that GADE is available to the whole university community, giving advice in quality assessment and improvement processes and for quality to develop in all different university areas and activities.
