Elinor Ostrom and Oliver Williamson shared the 2009 Nobel Prize for economics on Monday for their work on how economic transactions operate outside markets in common spaces and within companies.

The Riksbank, the Swedish central bank, has awarded the prize every year since 1969 in memory of Alfred Nobel, and this year was the first time this “new Nobel” has been awarded to a woman.
