EVOLUTIONARY APPROACHES TO ORGANIZATIONAL BEHAVIOR

This seminar will focus on evolutionary approaches to organizational behavior, i.e., approaches that aim to explain such behavior on the basis of neo-Darwinistic theorizing. It will include the effects on social climate of rivalry and competition with same sex others; the importance of status and loss thereof for employee well-being; the role of reciprocity and prosocial behavior between individuals from various organizational levels for organizational cohesion; and the effects on organizations and employees of processes of ostracism and social exclusion. In addition, attention will be paid to what on the basis of evolutionary theorizing can be learned about the cognitive limits for maintaining interpersonal relationships and about the changes in organizational processes with increasing organizational size.
