Career in organizations

The topic of career of people in organization is central in occupational and personnel psychology. Career is usually considered as the sequence of employment-related positions, roles and activities encountered by a person in a social context that could operate as a resource or as an obstacle for the individual development (Arnold, 1998).

Starting from this definition, the lectures could be devoted to two aspects of the psychology of career into organizations:

The changing nature of career in the last two decades, related to the main changes in economic system, in the labour market and in the organizations. For instance the role of short terms and part time contracts in defining the careers of people; the career planning of organizations as a human resource management strategy;

The meaning of career for people and the individual factors that could enhance career development strategies for employees in organizations. For instance the role of proactivity and personal initiative for the development of a protean career; the individual capacity to handle uncertainty and career self management.

These topics will be developed with a constant reference to empirical researches in the field of psychology of career and giving particular attention to the methodological issue in studying career in organizations.
