Research

I graduated in Molecular Biology and Physiology at the Faculty of Biology of the University of Belgrade, Serbia and Montenegro in 1998. The same year, I started my postgraduate studies in the research of malignant diseases in a population with a fellowship from the Clinical medical centre “Bezanijska kosa” in Belgrade. I was a member of the publishing team and I participated in an international co-operation involving the preparation of a new Serbian edition of a Medical Encyclopaedia, the monograph “New Challenges in Health Care”, a Medical Glossary etc. I also participated in the creation of the Cancer Foundation-Yugoslavia and in its various activities in lay public education on cancer prevention programs. In 2001 I started my PhD studies in the Department of Physiology at the University of Valencia. As a UNESCO-MCBN fellowship holder I spent three months at the Universidad Católica del "Sacro Cuore", Rome, with Prof Galeotti´s team working on the project "Importance of the Mn SOD in carcinogenesis and aging" where I gained valuable experience in the techniques of molecular and cell biology and met some wonderful people with a real passion for science. In 2002, as an academic guest, I worked at the Federal Institute of Technology (ETH) in Zurich, Switzerland, where I participated in two projects: “Catalytical antibodies” and “Development of the fully defined medium for cell culture”- a project of great importance from a scientific and ethical point of view, as the basic idea is to avoid the use of foetal bovine serum in the cultivation of certain cell lines. Working with René Fisher and Prof Hilvert’s group was a personal pleasure and a professional privilege. I was fortunate to be granted a fellowship for postgraduate studies by the AECI (Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Spain) and I returned to Valencia to continue working on my PhD project: “The role of the nuclear oxidative stress in the regulation of apoptosis and proliferation of mammary cancer cells MCF7” under the guidance of Prof Pallardó and Prof Viña.  I am really enjoying working on this project as it involves all my previous interests and it is a challenge to apply my knowledge and experience, thus learning more every day.

P.S. By the way, in the photo you can see the most promising and best looking of Mari Carmen’s trainees who just happens to be my daughter!
