SOMOS, VOSOTROS SOIS: LAS REPRESENTACIONES SOCIALES DEL CIUDADANO Y DEL
INMIGRANTE S.
ABSTRACT C The notion of citizenship
is actually challenged in European societies, due to the great changes
involving social, political and economical domains. Within the theoretical
framework of Social Representations, and following the concept of thêmata, a study involving Italian citizens (N=
282) was conducted in order to assess the meaning both of being a citizen and
an immigrant. Participants completed two free association tasks with the
stimuli good citizen and immigrant coupled with a standardised
questionnaire. The shared meanings associated with the notions of citizen and
immigrant were identified, as well as the organising
principles of both representations. Results showed that both representations
were related to the thêma of the subjectiveness–alterity
antinomy, and different patterns of psychosocial variables were associated to
the specific evoked images. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 36, 2008, 37-49 WHO BELIEVES
THAT IDENTIFICATION WITH ALL HUMANITY IS ETHICAL? S. McFarland, D. Brown Western
Kentucky University RESUMEN Eticos y ensayistas suelen resaltan
ABSTRACT Ethicists and essayists
often champion the ethical value of possessing a sense of identification with
all humanity, an identification that transcends identifications with nation,
ethnic group, and religion, an identification that views all humanity as family. Psychologists Alfred Adler
(1929/1964) and Abraham Maslow (1954) regarded this
identification as both the highest moral ideal and as characteristic of the
most mature (for Maslow, self-actualized) individuals. McFarland (e.g., McFarland and Hamer-Gutowska, 2006) has recently developed a measure of
this identification, the Identification
with All Humanity Scale (IWAHS). For this study, using this new
Identification with All Humanity Scale, we investigated whether ordinary
students view identification with all humanity as an expression of high
maturity and morality. We hypothesized that many would do so. We also
hypothesized that right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and the social dominance
orientation (SDO) would reduce viewing identification with all humanity as an
expression of mature morality. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 36, 2008, 51-76 THE QUESTION OF CONTENT IN THE STUDY OF TERRORISM AND THE TIMELY LINK TO SOCIAL INFLUENCE S. Papastamou,
T. Iatridis, G. Prodromitis Panteion
empleados indican tres dimensiones normativas,
ABSTRACT This paper makes a case for an analysis of
representations of terrorism informed by content, based on the contention
that content is absolutely indispensable in a social psychological account of
terrorism. Two exploratory studies are presented: Study 1 aimed to map the
representational field of terrorism and identify the organizing principles of
Greek adolescents’ representations of terrorism. Study 2 aimed to explore how these organizing principles are
normatively or semantically anchored. The analysis of the semantic criteria
that were employed pointed to three normative dimensions, relevant to classic
concerns in the field of social influence. It is further argued that raising the
issue of content in the study of terrorism may lead to a timely advancement
of our understanding of the generative mechanisms of social influence. Key
words: representations of terrorism, social influence processes,
normative representations. |

pertenencia a diferentes organizaciones.
ABSTRACT The paper analyzes the causal attributions of the
Islamic terrorism among undergraduates of psychology from Madrid (Spain) and León (Nicaragua). The study examined the attributional differences between Nicaraguan students
-observers not affected by the Islamic terrorism- and Spanish students
-observers directly affected by the Islamic terrorism- and, inside every
group, the attributional differences depending on
their socio-demographical characteristics, political attitudes and belonging
to different organizations. Data were collect by means of an auto-applied
questionnaire. Results show differences in the causal attributions of the
Islamic terrorism depending on the hedonic relevancy of this phenomenon for the
observers as well as differences inside every group depending on the
political ideology and the belonging to NGOs. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 36, 2008, 95-117 DETERMINANTS
OF SOCIAL AND POLITICAL PARTICIPATION AMONG YOUTH. A PRELIMINARY STUDY T. Mannarini, M. Legittimo,
ABSTRACT The present study is aimed
at testing the hypothesis of three forms of participation (namely political
conventional, political unconventional, and social) and that they can be
traced back to the same determinants. The study was carried out on
705 college students who completed a self-evaluation questionnaire. Independent
variables included in the analysis were; institution trustworthiness,
political interest, political efficacy, a cynicism towards politics,
political socialization, socio-demographic variables such as gender, age and
income, and political variables. Results show that the three forms of
participation are not mutually exclusive, so that the involvement in one
does not necessarily entail the exclusion of the other two. Nevertheless,
they cannot be traced back to a common pool of antecedents: the model
proposed can only be supported for political, and not for social participation,
which remains largely unexplained. Key
Word: political participation, social participation, determinants of
political participation. |
