Psicología Política, Nº 37, 2008, 7-28 THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN AFFECTIVE STATES AND THE STRUCTURE OF POLITICAL ATTITUDES C. V. Hunt,
D. Ergun, C. M. Federico University of
ABSTRACT Because the
political climate is often ridden with affect-inducing stimuli, it is
important to understand the relationship between emotions and political
cognition. Drawing from research in social psychology, this study is designed
to specifically investigate how emotions from different sources (i.e.,
everyday life or the state of the nation) influence the structure of
political attitudes. Using data from the 1996 General Social Survey and a
survey designed for the purpose of studying the relationship between emotions
and political attitudes, we argue that general affective states influence the
structure of people’s political attitudes via information processing. In
addition, we argue that people use emotional reactions to political events as
a heuristic for determining political attitudes. Key

recientemente el libro titulado Making Enemies: Humiliation and International Conflict (2006).
ABSTRACT Humiliation refers to both
an action and an emotion: it is the action of unjustly devaluating a person
or a group by others who have the power to do it. Humiliation is also the
emotion that is aroused when the victims are conscious that such devaluation
has occurred to them. The emotion of humiliation is deeply damaging for its
victims, with powerful consequences that are still to be completely
determined. Evelin Lindner, one of the scholars
that has studied more deeply the phenomenon of
humiliation, has recently published the book Making Enemies: Humiliation and International Conflict (2006). In
her book, the author warns about the crucial role that humiliation is
currently playing in some of the cruelest social conflicts among groups. The
present article summarizes the main ideas of the book, completing them with
some other contributions to the subject contained in the works of other
authors. Key

parte, Humala y García, estaban asociados a
ABSTRACT The aim of this paper is to
identify emotions that a group of young middle-class voters from Lima,
expressed toward a probable victory of Lourdes Flores, Ollanta
Humala and Alan Garcia during 2006 presidential
elections in Peru. To accomplish this objective, two samples were recruited:
one before the elections, and the other after them. Results suggest, taking
into consideration biases introduced during sampling, that Flores was
associated to positive emotions in both groups. On the other side, Ollanta Humala and Alan Garcia
were associated to negative emotions. Specifically, Humala's
participation was considered more threatening than Garcia's candidature.
Results are discussed analyzing the role played by
mass media during the elections. Also discussed are
how right-wing authoritarianism (RWA) and social dominance orientation (SDO)
influence emotional responses towards each candidate. Key
words: fear, emotions, political ideology, social worldview. |
Psicología Política, Nº 37, 2008, 71-84 RED LIGHT, GREEN LIGHT: ALTERING ATTITUDES ABOUT CLIMATE CHANGE WITH A
“GAME PRACTICE” SIMULATION GAME A.J.
Williams – R. H. Williams University of
ABSTRACT Despite the scientific
community’s warnings, the United States has not taken action to significantly
reduce its greenhouse gas emissions. Politicians as well as citizens consistently
fail to recognize the peril that climate change poses to the country and the
world. In an effort to change their attitudes and behaviors so that they will
be more likely to address this threat, we created the Red Light, Green Light simulation game. Red Light, Green Light was developed via Multiple Identification
Theory (MIT), a theoretical model for designing simulations so that they will
be more likely to promote attitudinal and behavioral change. The present
paper provides an overview of the Red
Light, Green Light simulation. We also discuss what we have observed in
play-tests regarding the strategies that participants use when playing the
game. Additionally, we explain how MIT simulations represent “game practice”
rather than “game theory” and the importance of a game practice design for
simulations seeking to encourage the transfer of game learning to real life. Key

SARKOZY.
ABSTRACT The psychological
examination of the presidents is a field of political psychology. The biography of
president Wilson written by Freud is a complex antecedent. This article does not claim to fall under
an ad hoc theory of the politician.
It deals only with
a combination of observations and comments on the public life of president
Nicolas Sarkozy. Included are a description of the presidential campaign of 2007 and the
sociopolitical situation in France, an examination of the techniques of
communication used, and some criteria for the psychological analysis of the praxis of political personalities. Key

Psicología Política, Nº 37, 2008, 101-117 CONCEPTUAL ELEMENTS FOR A THEORY OF
VISUAL POLITICAL PROPAGANDA Tom Bryder University
of Copenhagen RESUMEN En este ensayo, estoy
ABSTRACT In
this essay, I am primarily interested in the perspectives of those who construct
the visual propaganda, that is, the propagandists. They constitute, so to
speak, the supply-side of the propaganda process. The needs and wants of the
audiences constitute the demand aspect.
They want to be successful and, for it, they have a threefold task to
perform: they must construct a marked difference between themselves, and
their enemies, often in black-and-white terms; can
also operate on another, slightly different assumption, namely that of a granfalloon,
for example, diabolizing the enemy.
Finally, they must portray yourselves as victims of
the evil-doer, so that our own demands appear reasonable to a wider audience. Key
words: propagandist, audience, granfalloon, factoids, cabalism |
