RESEARCH INTERESTS

I am interested in both sides of aggression and violence: the aggressor and the victim. My main research interests are on the biological contribution to aggression and violence and the impact that violence, considered as a source of social stress, has on the victims. In animal models I have worked on the hormonal bases of aggressive behavior and on the consequences that the experience of defeat has on brain activity, the endocrine and autonomic nervous systems, and behavior. At the present, I am carrying out research on human victims of interpersonal violence, focusing on the impact that intimate partner violence has on mental and physical health, and the endocrine and immune systems of women. I am also interested on the impact that intimate partner violence can have on the children and on the cycle of violence: how victimization or exposure to violence can increase the likelihood of becoming an offender.
