Aims

The Cellular Neurobiology Research Unit combines the study of the central nervous system from a cellular and molecular perspective, with the basic and applied research of pluripotent stem cells. The central aim of our group is to identify the molecular and cellular mechanisms that regulate both the homeostasis of the nerve cells under physiological conditions as well as the biological processes that lead to the onset of pathologies of the central and peripheral nervous systems.

What do we do?

We combine in the lab different techniques to challenge our hypothesis. We use Electronic Transmitted Microscopy to carry out ultrastructural studies of cells and perform 3D reconstructions of different organelles. We use Static and Time-Lapse Confocal Microscopy to examine both the intracellular distribution and movement of proteins and organelles. We employ Biochemical Techniques to analyse the expression, post-translational modifications and interactions between proteins and proteins with DNA. We carry out comparative gene expression studies by using Microarrays and quantitative PCR. The combine usage of these techniques allow us to approach the study of complex biological questions, such those pathologies of the nervous system.

We carry out in the lab both basic research to understand what are the components of biological processes of interest, and applied studies to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying the onset of neurodegenerative diseases.
