Barcelona BioMed Forum
REACHING THE FRONTIER: HOW TO ACHIEVE SUCCESS WITH THE ERC
Thursday, May 27, 2010 - 16h-19h
Organized by IRB Barcelona
Venue: Institut d'Estudis Catalans, c. del Carme, 47,
Barcelona
The European Research Council (ERC) is a powerful mechanism
to drive research of excellence and its establishment has brought with it huge potential and huge expectations. The first call in 2007 was met with a staggering 9167
applications for 250 grants available. With such steep
competition, what are the factors that make the difference?
Which characteristics must a researcher have to tap into
this important resource?
What role do universities, research institutes, regions and governments play and how can they contribute to chances for
success?
The aim of this Barcelona BioMed Forum is to bring together
key players from the ERC, together with local and national
science policy makers, as well as researchers who have
received ERC grants to examine the factors that have enabled
them to take advantage of this important resource.

ERC - FROM PROGRAMME TO INSTITUTION
Friday, May 28, 2010 - 9h-18h
Organized by the Initiative for Science in Europe (ISE)
in collaboration
with IRB Barcelona
Venue: Institut d'Estudis Catalans, c. del Carme, 47,
Barcelona
The ERC is a unique body created in 2007 as an autonomous
part of the EU
Framework Programme 7 (FP7) in order to support, at the EU
level,
investigator-driven fundamental research of the highest
quality. Its immense
success, shown by the massive response generated by its
programme,
demonstrates the importance of the ERC for the future of
European science
and its actors.
Everything, however, is not a bed of roses. In July 2009 a
high level panel
published a review of the ERC’s Structures and Mechanisms
which, whilst
recognizing the outstanding achievements of the ERC,
provided strong
recommendations to address “...fundamental problems related
to rules and
practices regarding the governance, administration and
operations of the ERC
that are not adapted to the nature of modern 'frontier'
science management.”
Three years after its creation, as discussions on FP8 start,
it is thus time
to review the achievements of the ERC and to consider how it
can develop in
the future into the stable and performing institution that
is desired. The
scientific community, which has been instrumental in the
creation of the
ERC, must contribute to these discussions. These are the
objectives of the
conference organized by the Initiative for Science in Europe
in conjunction
with IRB Barcelona.
