JUNITA LAMPRECHT

University of Port Elizabeth Choir Conductor

 

Junita Lamprecht holds a Diploma in Music Education and a B Mus Degree from the University of Port Elizabeth, and is presently doing her masteres degree in Applied Choral Conducting with Prof Kaare Hanken as study leader and Prof Svein Bjorkoy (both from Norway) as voice specialist at the University of Port Elizabeth.

She founded the Framesby School Choir in 1973 where they recorded numerous local and international achievements under her leadership, including winning the Silvertulip International Music Festival in the Netherlands in 1981. She led the Eastern Cape Children’s Choir from 1983 until 1987.

In 1994 she started the UPE Choir, with a vision to create a multi-cultural consciousness amongst the students and to broaden their horizons. Junita has regularly presented master classes and workshops in choral conducting all over South Africa and abroad, and introduced a unique range of choral conducting courses to the academic programme of the University of Port Elizabeth.

Junita received the Port Elizabeth Mayor’s Citizen of the Year award for her role in the uplifment of the cultural life of the city (1999), a special show time award as well as the Eastern Cape Premier’s Cultural Award for choral music.
