It has been incorporated in Web (Artistic
collections) the series of nine portraits made by the
famous Valencian photographer Antonio García Peris in the
19th Century about illustrious characters of
the university institution.
The historic photography collection of Universitat de
València includes a series of portraits of great artistic
and technical quality made by the photographer Antonio
García Peris (1841- 1918), an excellent portrait
photographer and one of the outstanding figures in 19th/20th
century Valencian photography. Among his portraits are
those of Valencian artists like Mariano Benlliure or
Joaquín Sorolla (his son-in-law), his granddaughters María
and Elena, and his wife Clotilde del Castillo.
The photographic series commissioned to him by the
University of València includes the deans of the medical
college: Fernando de Vida Pérez, Francisco Armet Moragas,
Francisco Navarro Rodrigo (outstanding anatomist from
Valencia); chancellors: Enrique Ferrer y Viñerta (19th
century Valencian surgeon), Nicolás Ferrer y Julve
(surgeon, the successor of Ferrer y Viñerta), and other
distinguished figures from different disciplines: Diego
Godoy Rico (medical professor), Mariano Batllés y Bertrán
de Lis (medical professor), Francisco de Paula Campá Porta
(professor in obstetrics and female and child diseases),
and Juan Vilanova y Piera (geology, palaeontology and
prehistory).
The photographic portraits of the collection (black and
white positives on paper) were made with the platinotype
technique, which provides excellent quality and stability.
