Research project

Postcarbon society is a society in which fossil fuels supply decreases each year. The transition to such a society is determined by the need to fight climate change or by oil and gas depletion (or by complex combinations of both causes).

The transition to a postcarbon society does not only imply technological and political changes, but it will also require significant (and probably deep) transformations of lifestyles, consumption patterns and forms of urbanization, as well as many other aspects of social organization.

Social trajectories in that direction will depend on the history of each place or country, the cultural contexts and other particular aspects. Because of all that different transitions to different postcarbon societies must be expected. The current project assumes the Mediterranean area as its geographical context.

The project started in 2012 and its development is expected until the end of 2014. It is being carried out by a team consisting of researchers from the universities of Paris 1 (Panthéon-Sorbonne), Barcelona and Valencia, and it is being coordinated from the latter.

The project is a part of the Subprogramme of Fundamental not Oriented Research Projects, within the framework of the Spanish National R&D Programme (grant CSO2011-24275).
