Objetivos/Aims
of the course:
·
to explore the relationship between gender and
language/discourse at an introductory graduate level.
·
to examine the nature and function of sex
differences and/or similarities in communication.
·
to examine the contrast between stereotypes about
how women and men communicate and the actually occurring patterns.
·
to examine sex differences and/or similarities
in linguistic forms (pronunciation, vocabulary, syntax, etc.); conversational
patterns; issues of status and politeness; gender bias in language use and
strategies for changing sexist linguistic practices; etc.
·
to teach students to be critical towards
gender-biased stereotypes about language use.
·
to stimulate awareness of how culturally
enshrined ideas about gender affect language and the use of language and, in
turn, how linguistic conventions for the expression of gender differences
and/or similarities tend to reinforce these ideas.
Evaluación/Assessment:
Students
will be required to prove that they have grasped the theoretical and practical
aspects covered in the course and that they are capable of applying them to a
variety of English-language texts.
Evaluation:
(1) A written paper (approx. 1,500
words) on a research topic* assigned
by lecturer, to be handed in by 13 January 2006 + a brief summary
& personal opinion on gender/sex-related aspects of one of the
sessions of the III Workshop on Gender
and Language [Gender, Sex &
Popular Texts] to be held on October 20 & 21 [40% of the total mark]; and
(2) A final written exam consisting of any
of the theoretical and/or practical issues included in the syllabus (30 January 2006 –place and time
to be decided). [60% of the total
mark]
* Main focuses this year include: the language of sex;
gender and politeness; gender/sex and translation.

Condición previa/Initial
Requirements:
Desirable, though not essential, is a basic grounding in English linguistics as
well as an interest in literary studies. Failure to have achieved a
post-Cambridge First Certificate level of English will put students at a
disadvantage: the exams and tuition are in English, there is an important
practical element, and literary sources included in the course content reflect
numerous genres, styles and nuances.

Objetivos/Aims of the Course: The main aim of the course is to teach
students how different areas of English linguistics may be applied to literary
criticism and to the appreciation of literary discourse while at the same
familiarising them with the rationale, mechanisms, and terminology of stylistics.
A secondary aim is to provide students with the means whereby their overall
enjoyment and understanding of literature (and other discourses) may be
enhanced. It is also assumed that the practical and theoretical classes will
contribute to the consolidation and improvement of students' general English
language abilities.
Evaluación/Assessment:
(1) Final exam: 2 February 2006 (place and time to be decided)
[The exam is worth 60% of the total
mark]. Students
will be expected either (a) to answer coherently, concisely and clearly, and in
brief essay form, a series of questions based on items dealt with in class
and/or on source material as stipulated by the lecturer; or (b) to answer a
series of multiple choice type questions; or a combination of both; and
(2) a
short paper (approx. 1,500
words) –assigned by the lecturer– analysing a significant passage or chapter
from either (a) popular romance fiction; or (b) erotic literature. This year’s
focus is on the language of sex. The paper has to be submitted by 13 January
2005 + a brief summary & personal opinion

textos jurídics. / To teach students to be able to assess and criticise the
strengths and/or weaknesses of translations of legal texts.
Evaluación/Avaluació/Assessment:
(1) A written paper, of a practical
nature, assigned by lecturer, to be handed in by 31 May 2006. (40% of the total mark); and
(2) A final written exam consisting of 2
translations (English-Spanish & Spanish-English) of legal texts and/or
a few short theoretical questions connected with any of the theoretical
and/or practical issues included in the syllabus. [60% of the total mark]. Date: 26 June 2006 (time
