The UV develops a methodology for the use of sewage water in areas with water shortage

  • June 29th, 2017

The Universitat de València has developed a multidisciplinary work methodology that can identify the areas of interest with hydric deficit as well as study the possibilities for re-use of regenerated water. This project falls within an agreement signed by the academic institution and the Agriculture Department with the purpose of developing applied research projects related to the water treatment, the aquatic and marine ecosystems, water resources management and the aquifer recharge.

The methodology has been applied in the Pinedo Sewage Treatment Plant, where it has been consider the re-use of water and the obtaining of flows full of nutrients (nitrogen with ammonia and orthophosphate) which are low in solids and are free of pathogenic and contaminant organisms according with law.

Regarding the reduction of the energy consuming, some modifications at the working of the plant have been considered: ultrafiltration membranes have been incorporated after the primary decantation and the use of organic matter of the entering flow at the Plant for the energy production. It is also considered the reduction of the retention time in the reactors of mud. Therefore, the energy consumption related to the ventilation of the reactors is minimised.

The Universitat de València has conducted the project with the multidisciplinary participation of the following research teams: Soils, Residues and Environment Group; Water quality and Aquatic Ecosystem Restoration Group; Miniaturization and Total Methods Group; Water Economy Group; Climatology from Satellites Group; Food and Environmental safety; Water Quality Group and the Laboratory of Intelligent Data Analysis.

The leading researchers of this multidisciplinary project are Rafael Boluda Hernández, Antonio Camacho González, Pilar Campins Falcó, Francesc Hernández Sancho, Ernesto López Baeza, Yolanda Picó García, Aurora Seco Torrecillas and Emilio Soria Olivas.

Two groups of EIP WATER have also collaborated: Anaerobic MBR for WATER Resource Recovery in CIRCuLar Economy: WATER CIRCLE, led by Aurora Seco Torrecillas; and RESEWAM-O -Remote sensing for water management optimization led by Ernesto López Baeza.
