DELE (Diplomas of Spanish as a Foreign Language) is a certificate given by the Instituto Cervantes. It is the official accreditation of the degree of fluency of the Spanish Language, issued and recognised by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sport of Spain.

General information

This Certificate is the only officially recognized title of Spanish as foreign language and as 2nd language in the correspondent levels, and it is recognized internationally by private companies, chambers of commerce and public and private educational institutions.

 

Addresses

Anyone wanting to take any of the DELE exams must comply with the following requirements:

  • Proof of citizenship of a country where Spanish is not the official language.
  • Citizens from Spanish speaking countries living in other countries where Spanish is not the official language, may register for the DELE´s if they fulfill at least two of the following conditions (and declare it in a written document): Spanish is not the mother tongue of any of his/her parents.
  • Spanish is not the first language that he/she learned.
  • Spanish is not the habitual language used for communicating.
  • He/She has not studied in Spanish in the total or part of his/her primary or secondary education

 

Levels

At the University of Valencia, the candidates can enrol for:

 

DELE Level B1:

It accredits the sufficient linguistic competence to understand and react adequately in everyday common situations and to express basic wishes and needs.

 

DELE Level B2:

This accredits the necessary knowledge of the language to allow communication in everyday situations which do not require specialized terms.

 

DELE C1:

It accredits the sufficient linguistic competence to understand a wide range of demanding texts, to be able to express ideas fluently and spontaneously with without much obvious searching for expressions and to be able to use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.

Information about the exam:

For all levels, the exam consists of 5 parts (reading comprehension, written paper, listening comprehension, grammar and vocabulary and oral exam). These parts are organised in three groups. To get the Certificate a suitable qualification in each of these groups within one exam is required.

The exam leading to a certificate is independent of former exams so the candidates can choose freely the level and the certification that they consider adequate for their preparation and aims. However, due to the exams of the different levels being taken at the same hour and day, it is not possible to do more than one exam at the same examination date.

 

Registration

The University of Valencia participates in the examination in May and November.

Obtaining of the Certificate

The Instituto Cervantes will communicate the results to the candidates within 3 months starting from the date of the exam. The Instituto Cervantes will make the notification of individualised qualifications, which will be sent immediately to the candidates through the University of Valencia. The Instituto Cervantes cannot give the qualification to the candidates before the date of publication.

It is the students’ responsibility to keep their postal details updated with the University of Valencia until they had received all the documents related to the exam.

The Instituto Cervantes has an informative service for the results. To check their qualifications, candidates have to insert their code of registration and their date of birth.
