The Principal expresses his understanding over the social unrest, but he deplores incidents in the opening of Universitat d’Estiu de Gandia

Yesterday, Universitat de València’s Principal, Esteban Morcillo, expressed his understanding over the unrest of many social groups because of the crisis and the recent political measures, but he also deplored the incidents that happened in the opening of the summer school, Universitat d’Estiu de Gandia. The first part of the event had to be suspended when a large group of people began to shout slogans against the local representatives. Scheduled lectures were cancelled, though later Javier de Lucas, full professor of law philosophy, could read his lecture, which was loudly applauded.

The Principal make everyone aware that the university community is suffering these budgetary cuts as well and they have accordingly expressed against them many times. These cuts directly affect the rights of the students to have a quality higher education. But he also stressed the need to promote cooperation between the institutions in order to end this crisis. He stated that he will work to maintain this cooperation’s spirit with the Gandia’s city council. Universitat de València has been cooperating with this city council for 29 years under the governance of different political forces for the summer school courses’ continuity.

Javier de Lucas’ lecture was titled ‘Cine: lecciones de libertad’. It received a big ovation. De Lucas was presented by the general secretary of Universitat de València, María José Añón. The UEG’s director, Josep Montesinos, presented this year’s programme as well.

This year’s new features

This year’s new feature is the courses structure. A total of 22 courses of 20 or 10 hours have been scheduled. The 20 hours courses will last for two days and a the 10 hours courses will take two mornings. This way, the courses lasting a whole week no longer exist and the instruction is brought together. This time, about 600 people is taking the courses.

As usual, round tables and evening activities open to the public have been also scheduled. Round tables will be at 20:00 at Casa de la Marquesa and will tackle some topics as the Arab riots, Islamism and women, the relationship between cinema en television, the future of the Spanish cinema, etc.

Regarding the evening activities, this year cinema has the main role. On July 16, a screening of Les joies del cine mut a la col.lecció de l’IVAC is scheduled. Live music will be played at the same time, as it used to be at that time. On the remaining days, more screenings are scheduled: Ser o no ser by Ernest Lubitsch; Con faldas y a lo loco by Billy Wilder, El guateque by Black Edwards; Rufufú by Mario Monicelli; El quinteto de la muerte by Alexander Mackendrick or Plácido by Luís García Berlanga. All the films are shown at 22:30 at the garden of Casa de la Marquesa.

This year the summer university is showing an exhibition devoted to the cinema as well. It is titled ‘Fotogrames de paper. Cartells de cine de Rafael Raga Montesinos.’ This way, a hundres cinema posters made by Rafael Raga, one of the most important graphic artists in the XXth century, are shown. He worked for production companies like CIFESA and PCE, but he also was part of the group El Sifón, which gathered Valencian artists committed with the Second Republic. Prison interrupted Raga’s career. After that, he started to sign his posters with the pseudonym Ramón, by which he was known from then on.

This exhibition is open from 10:00 to 13:00 and from 17:00 to 20:00 at Espai d’Art.
