The UV posthumously awarded a medal to the painter Joaquín Michavila, today Monday 24. The Botanical Garden of the UV will host this event from 18 hours. The artist, who was a full university professor, died last 21 August at the age of 90. He was an example of the abstract movement.

Joaquín Michavila (L’Alcora, 1926 - Albalat dels Tarongers, 2016) was a full univiersity professor of Didactics of Plastic Expression at the old Faculty of Teaching Training of the UV, as well as one of the most important Valencian artists of contemporary art.

Trained as a teacher, he completed his studies with the former Spanish undergraduate degree in Fine Arts and then he worked as a professor at the UV between 1966 and 1991. His teaching and researching activity was combined with a parallel artistic career.

From the beginning of the 1950s, his large pictorial production lived a constant personal and artistic development that showed his conceptual and emotional curiosity, thus becoming a model of the Valencian pictorial abstraction with international projection.

In the university area, he headed the Department of Didactics of Musical, Plastic and Corporal Expression, and he encouraged the first Media laboratory of the UV, creating this way an experimentation group called Mirall.

Academic of Fine Arts in San Carlos of Valencia, he headed this artistic institution, of which he was Honorary Member. Moreover, he was a member of the Martínez Guerricabeitia Board of the General Foundation of the Universitat de València.

He received a Honour for Cultural Merit of the Valencian Government, the Gold Medal of the city of Valencia and the Prize of Plastic Arts.
