Orfeó Universitari de València celebrates its 70th anniversary at Serenates with a work of Francisco Coll and ‘Stabat Mater’ of Dvorák

Francesc Valldecabres

This Wednesday, 28 June, the Orfeó Universitari de València (OUV) will give a concert at the Cloister of La Nau within the festival Serenates which is organised by the Universitat de València and the Valencian Institute for Culture and has the support of the City Hall of Valencia (Councils of Cultural, Festivities and Youth), the Valencian Provincial Council, the Higher Institute of Artistic Teaching of the Valencian Community (ISEACV), The Valencian Academy of Language, the Bancaja Foundation, the Sabadell Bank Foundation and the French Institute of Valencia.

The programme that will be played by the aggrupation directed by Francesc Valldecabres will present two works. Firstly, the errand that the Orfeó made to Francisco Coll in the framework of the Projecte Residències. With this errand, the OUV aims to strengthen the project with one of the most interesting Valencian composers and whose career is recognised in the current outlook. The Coll’s works  have been played by the London Symphony Orchestra, Los Angeles Philharmonic, Canadian Brass, ONE, Cuarteto Casals, Orquestra de la Comunitat Valenciana, Sinfonieorchester Baden-Baden und Freiburg, etc. ‘Lacrimae’ is his second work for a cappella chorus and the soloist role will be played by Saray García. On this occasion, Coll uses the text ‘Stabat Mater’, which connects it with the other work of the programme, the one from Dvorák.

In the second part of the programme, the Orfeó will play ‘Stabat Mater’ of Antonín Dvořák (1841-1904). This work was played in the 60th anniversary of OUV together with the Valencian Orchestra and under the direction of Virginia Martínez. In this anniversary the work will be played again. However, in this case, the performance will be based on the first version of 1876 which is not yet orchestrate and with the piano part made by the same composer. This version highlights the dramatic and intimate aspect of the work where the voices are the main protagonists. On this occasion, the Orfeó will count on an exceptional soloist quartet made up by the Valencian voices of Paloma Chiner and Marina Rodríguez-Cusí, the Catalan Albert Montserrat and Lluís Sintes, who is from Menorca. They will be accompanied by the pianist Paula Tamarit.

According to the director Francesc Valldecabres, ‘the Orfeó wants to highlight the three main aspects that have always represented its main characteristics. Firstly, the bet on the most current repertoires as witnessed by the great amount of first releases that can be found in its CV. In this occasion, it will underline the training aspect of the participants. Secondly, the symphonic repertoire that has been constant during its trajectory, especially until the creation of the Valencian Government Choir’.

On Thursday, Serenates will host the Valencia Orchestra, directed by Albert Gonzálvez, which will perform works of S. Prokofiev, P. Dukas and C. Debussy for the benefit of the Spanish Association Against Cancer.

On Friday 30, the voice of Amancio Prada will liven up the night of Serenates with ‘Sonetos del amor oscuro, canciones y gacelas de Federico García Lorca’. Three years after of its performance in this festival, he returns to La Nau with the poems of the poet from Granada.

On Saturday July 1st, Capella i Escolania of the Misteri d’Elx will perform at the Cloister of La Nau this exceptional sample of the medieval theatre which is recognised by UNESCO as a master piece of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity in 2001.

Between 6 and 9 July, the programming of ‘Serenates’ is coproduced with the ‘July Festival’ and it adopts a more popular and folk character. The first concert will be the 6 at the Cloister but the rest will take place at the Patriarca Square. It will be a concert of the group Danses del Corpus de Valencia. The entry to all concerts is free.

On 7 the groups of dolçaines, tabalers and percussion of La Socarrà and the Universitat de València, which are directed by Pere Molina i Gonzàlez, will act.

On 8 July it will be the turn of Sociedad Musical Santa María Magdalena de Novelda, directed by Juan José Cuenca, with a programme of festive music.

The singer-songwriter from Alcúdia, Jonatan Penalba, will close the festival on Sunday 9 with ‘De so ca-rel’.
