The spectacular cantata by Carl Orff ‘Carmina Burana’ will be performed this Saturday 28, at 20:00, in the Palau de la Música of Valencia, and Sunday 29 November, at 19:00, in the Gran Teatre of Xàtiva, by La Nau Choir School of the Universitat de València, the Choir Amici Musicae from the auditorium of Zaragoza, the soprano María de los Lanos, the baritone Vicente Antequera, the tenor José Manuel Delicado and the Orquestra Filharmònica of the Universitat de València, run by the principal conductor, master Milari Garcia.
‘Carmina Burana’ is one of the most well-known pieces in the history of classical music, specially the ‘O Fortuna’, for its magnificence, rhythm and spectacularity. It is a collection of medieval chants from the German monastery of Beuren, about the unstable Fortune and delights of earthly pleasures. Orff wrote music for it and also released in 1937.
The popularity of some of his passages is reflected in some adaptations. Thus, the movie ‘Excalibur’ (John Boorman 1981) had some scenes with music from Orff’s Carmina Burana; Michael Jackson used ‘O Fortuna’ as the music for his ‘Brace Yourself’; Ozzy Osbourne also used ‘O Fortuna’ as part of his live shows; Ray Manzarek, The Doors keyboard player, recorded Orff’s entire work with rock arrangement; and the ‘new age’ band Enigma used his chants from ‘O Fortuna’ for their CD ‘The Screen Behind the Mirror’.
This time, Master Hilari Garcia gathers more than 200 performers who combine hobbies and professionalism under the common denominator of music quality. The two leading groups , the Orquestra and the Choir Amici, celebrate this year their anniversary: the choir celebrates 25 years old and the Orquestra, 20. This is why they have been preparing this concert, which will be repeated in the Auditorium of Zaragoza next 20 December.
