Sílvia Pérez Cruz and Javier Colina open on Saturday the festival ‘Serenates’, all sold out

The singer Sílvia Pérez Cruz and the musician Javier Colina are two of many great artists who will perform in the "Serenates" festival which will take place between the 25th of June and the 10th of July in the cloister of the Cultural Centre La Nau of Universitat de València. The festival will commemorate its twenty-ninth edition with a considerable increase in the number of performances: 15 concerts will take place this year. Tickets for the first concert have already ran out.

The “Serenates” festival has taken place since the year 1984 and is co-produced by Universitat de València,  the directorate of Música de CulturArts and the collaboration of the Valencia city council, AVL, la Escuela de Arte y Superior de Diseño de Valencia, Bancaja Foundation and Sabadell Bank Foundation.

This Monday the festival was presented at a press conference in La Nau by the following: the vice-principal of Culture and Equality of UV, Antonio Ariño; the main director of Culture and Heritage, Carmen Amoraga; the councillor and president of Palau de la Música, Glória Tello; the councillor of Cultura Festiva, Pere Fuset: the president of the Bancaja Foundation , Rafael Alcón; and the regional director of Valencia Sabadell Bank, Ramón Reche.

The idea of employing the cloisters of UV´s historical building as a setting for the Summer music festival has been a great success from the beginning. The festival´s programme is largely dedicated to music created and performed by Valencian musicians.

In the 2016 edition of the festival there will be 15 performances, which is a significant increase in comparison to the 11 performances which took place last year.  Another important news is the co-production of “Serenates” and the “July Festival” (thanks to the cooperation of Concejalía de Fiestas y Cultura Popular of the Valencia city council) in three concerts which will be performed in the Patriarca Square (between 08.07 and 10.07) and which are expected to be especially popular.

The festival will begin on the 25th of June with excellent performers such as singer-songwriter Silvia Pérez Cruz, Perico Sambeat, Javier Colina, Marc Miralta and Albert Sanz who will perform an album called “In the imagination”. the album has been awarded the prize for the best jazz album of independent music 2012.

On the 26th of June, a Valencian band Capella de Ministrers, which specializes in the revival of historical music from the Renaissance, will perform “Super Lamentationes Hermiae Prohete” by Cristóbal de Morales.

On the 27th of the same month, the JJMM Orchestra from University of León will perform as a part of an exchange of Spanish University Orchestras “Sinergia” which has been propelled by Universitat de València.

On the 29th and the 30th of June, the Philharmonic Orchestra of UV, will put on an audio-visual show titled “La setena parada: viatge musical entre cultures en 7 moviments” under the artistic direction of Tono Berti and musical direction of Hilari Garcia, to celebrate the XX anniversary of the Orchestra.  Apart from that, other performers will be the male voices from Orfeón Universitario and Lluís Vich Vocalis.

On the 1st of July, the Valencian band Estil Concertant, specializing in the performance of baroque music and classical European music, will present a programme with arias by Mozart and Martín i Soler, sang by the soprano Maribel Monar.

The protagonist of the 2nd of July will be a young chorister, Leioa Kantika Korala from Basque Country, under the direction of Basilio Astulez, one of the most important figures of musical pedagogy in Spain.

On the 3rd of July, Orfeó Universitari de València, will present for the first time “Ad urbe condita” by Ramon Pastor and “Eroticitats” by Pau de Luis; both are natives of Valencia and have been resident composers of the  grouping in 2015 and 2016, respectively.

On the 4th of July, the Generalitat Valenciana chorus, directed by Francesc Perales, will present the programme “Poesia al cor: del Tirant a la generació del 27” with love poems set to music.

On the 5th of July, the virtuoso violinist Jordi Savall will perform “La reveuse” with works by Marin Marais and by Mr. de Sainte-Colombe.

On the 6th of July, the Valencia Orchestra will give a charity concert in which the participation of young musicians will be key. This concert is co-produced by Palau de la Música and is under the general direction of José Sanchís.

On the 7th of July, Colectivo Mortero, formed by Paula Miralles, Esther Vidal and Pilar Parreño, will put on a show called “La pell possible”. It is an interdisciplinary project of music, poetry, theatre and art which joins voices of poets such as Ausiàs March, Vicent Andrés Estellés, Marc Granell, Manuel Asensi, Begonya Pozo and Lola Andrés. This concert is co-produced with Acadèmia Valenciana de la Llengua (AVL).

Starting on the 8th of July, there will be concerts dedicated to “Música popular i les Serenates” the setting of which will be different: they will take place at Patriarca Square. These concert are performed as part of the “July Festival” organized by the Valencia city council.

The first of these concerts will take place on the 8th, and will feature los Tornejants and la Muixeranga de Algemesí. The dance and music show will start in the cloister and will later move toward the square where it will finish.  La Muixeranga was declared by UNESCO to be Cultural Heritage of Humanity in 2011, and it is considered to be the best way to connect “Serenate” to its popular culture characteristics.

On the 9th of July, Urbàlia Rurana and la Romántica del Saladar will perform in concert called “La vespra i la festa”. Two of Valencia´s most emblematic bands come together to play all possible styles in the eve of the town celebrations: pasacalles, waltzes, jotas, pasadobles, folk dances and various kinds of folk songs.

On the 10th of July, la Joven Banda Sinfónica de la Federación de Sociedades Musicales de la Comunitat Valenciana (FSMCV), under the direction of Pablo Marcara, joins the singer Pep el Botifarra in the concert “Botifarra a banda” with arrangements for voice and folk music.

The foreseen participation in these 15 concerts consists of as many as 739 performers (250 more artists than in the previous edition), 518 of which are young people (younger than 26 years old). Another piece of important information is that 644 of 739 participating artists (87%) are natives of Valencia.

Throughout the years, many musical works have been performed at the festival, or have been rescued from centuries of oblivion in various musical archives in Valencia; what´s more, many Valencian bands have debuted in the festival, since the festival has become a platform for the promotion and circulation of one of the most treasured cultural values of Valencia: music.  During these three decades, the programme has been eclectic, given that performing groups display various musical styles, ranging from the Renaissance to contemporary music, among many others.

The tickets to the festival can be purchased starting this Tuesday, the 7th of June, on the website http://www.latenda.es/entrades
