The Universitat de València celebrates the International Year of Light and Light-Based Technologies (IYL 2015) with an exhibition organised by several universities. The exhibition, formed by experiments, historic contents, holograms, electric installations and audio-visual materials, opens this Tuesday, 26 January, at 19:00, at Cerveró Palace. The institutional act will be accompanied by a performance by the Pdp11 group of the Light Laboratory of the Universitat Politècnica de València.
Approved by the United Nations to raise awareness about sustainable development, the International Year of Light gathers a series of initiatives that promote the knowledge of the possibilities of light radiation.
The exhibition ‘En clave de luz’ has as an objective to present from different examples and formats, the incorporation of light-based technology in our daily life. Organised by the Office of the Vice-Principal for Culture and Equality of the Universitat de València and by initiative of the Faculty of Physics and the Light Laboratory, associated to the Faculty of Fine Arts of the Universitat Politècnica de València, which celebrates its 25 anniversary, the project presents a wide perspective of the potential of light where contemporary research, technique and plastic meet.
The exhibition has an experimental and expository nature, and the intention is that the audience gets to know the light phenomenon through installations and experiments. In this scope, five holograms stand out which come from the archive of the Museum of the University of Alacant, whose origin goes back to the Holography Centre of Alacant, which permit to observe the ability of light to create three-dimensional images.
In this lecture, we find ‘Pecera mágica’ (2010) by the artist Cristina M. Gómez-Sarabia, of Universidad of Guanajuato, who uses the polarisation phenomena to create a magic environment and also defends the non-usage of living animals for decorative purposes.
The exhibition presents two installations made by the group of artists of the Light Laboratory of the Faculty of Fine Arts. The piece called ‘On-Off’ uses dual layer translucent screens in order to play with positions, proportions and inverted points of view of the audience, in a way that they are invited to experiment with the limits and contradictions of the visual perception. On the other hand, the piece ‘On-Sense’, which has been designed specifically for this exhibition proposes the interaction of the audience for generating images and sounds in real-time.
The whole tour is accompanied by images and texts which, through informative panels, explain the importance of light in different fields: Medicine, optic communications, energy consumption, light pollution, art creation, the environment (chlorophyll), the colour in our daily lives and its generation through light. The Spanish Royal Society for Physics and the Spanish Society for Optics have participated in its elaboration, as well as different professors of University of Alacant, Miguel Hernandez University and Universitat de València.
A display cabinet completes the exhibition. In it some experiments with polarimeters and prisms, and two audiovisual named ‘La Luz que nos envuelve’ and ‘Los secretos de la Luz’ are exemplified. Likewise, references to historical pieces are also made. These pieces come from the scientific and medical collection of the Universitat de València and can be visited in the permanent exhibition in that same building.
This expositive project is complemented by a cycle of conferences by professors and specialists, and will take place in the Assembly Hall of the Cerveró Palace until 1 March and will deal with subjects such as optic microscopy in present times, medical image or the exploration of smartphones devices.
