The principal of the Universitat de València, Esteban Morcillo, and the president of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), Emilio Lora-Tamayo, have signed on Tuesday an agreement for the creation of the Spanish National Research Council (I2SysBio), which will be a mixed centre of both institutions. The event had the presence of the State Secretary for Research, Development and Innovation, Carmen Vela, and of the president of the Valencian Government, Ximo Puig.
To the event, which took place in the building La Nau of the historical headquarters of the Universitat de València, have attended the Government Delegate in the Valencian Community, Juan Carlos Moragues, the vice-president for Organisation and Institutional Relations at the CSIC, José Ramón Urquijo; the institutional coordinator for CSIC in the Valencian Community, José Pío Beltrán; the vice-principal for Research and Science Policy of the Universitat de València, Pilar Campins; and the managing director for Biopolis, Daniel Ramón, among others.
“Although systems biology has precedents in the last third of the last century, it is a recent discipline which counts with applicable plans in fields like biotechnology and pharmacology, among others. The creation of a institute for research allocated to it is a remarkable achievement on the part of Spanish science”, said Lora-Tamayo.
“It is a very strong agreement which began in 2011 as an action of strengthening of the bond between the Universidad de Valencia and the CSIC”, highlighted Estaban Morcillo. “But in this context, the project has been accomplished undr two important premises: the recognised scientist excellence of the researchers and the innovation in the collaboration model public-private, which suppose a new tool for the transfer of knowledge and so, for the change of the production model”, said the principal.
The Institute for Systems and Integrative Biology, which counts with a tripartite agreement with the biotechnological firm Biopolis, will be opened in a few months, once the scientist and business activity begin.
Recent academic discipline
Systems and Integrative Biology is a discipline which is responsible for the study of biological process of organisms as systematics processes, not individuals, and which requires the work of biochemists, microbiologists, physicist, engineers experts in modelling and other specialists to develop the research.
Systems and Integrative Biology involves the progress of the knowledge and the optimization of the processes of good and services producing, so its activity is closely linked with productive sectors of the food industry and biomedical field, among others.
Institute for Systems and Integrative Biology (I2SysBio) will have its headquarters in a building located in the Science Park, in the Burjassot-Paterna Campus of the Universitat de València. It is created with the main objective of presenting biological problems in a systematic perspective, and contributing to consolidate the Systems and Integrative Biology in Spain.
