The Universitat de València invests this Friday, January 30, the physicist Juan Ignacio Cirac as a doctor “honoris causa”. The event, promoted by VLC-Campus will begin in the auditorium of the historic building of Cultural Centre La Nau at 12 hours. The “laudatio” will be headed by Germán de Valcárcel, full university professor of Optics at the Faculty of Physics. Previously, on Thursday 29, Cirac will participate in a meeting of excellence in the Campus of Burjassot.

Juan Ignacio Cirac Sasturain (Manresa, 1965) is a graduate and PhD in Physics from the Complutense University of Madrid. Currently, and since 2001, is director of the theoretical division Max-Planck-Institut für Quantenoptik (Max-Planck Institute for Quantum Optics in Germany).

Cirac was professor at the University of Castilla-La Mancha, a researcher at the University of Colorado and full university professor of the Institut für Theoretische Physik of the Leopold Franzens Universität Innsbruck. Internationally recognised for his work in quantum optics, quantum information and quantum physics, among his most important contributions include the first proposed quantum computer based on a factible physical system in the laboratory and the idea that cold atoms trapped in optical lattices can be used as simulators of systems of condensed matter.

Author of more than three hundred articles in leading journals in physics, he is one of the most cited authors in this field. He has received many honours and awards, among them the medal of the Royal Spanish Society of Physics, Quantum Electronics Prize of the European Physical Society, the Prince of Asturias Award for Technical and Scientific Research, the awards “Wolf”, National research “Blas Cabrera”, “Frontiers of Knowledge” of the BBVA Foundation and medals of honour of Niels Bohr Institutet and “Benjamin Franklin” of the Franklin Institute.

Meeting Excellence VLC/ CAMPUS in Physics

On Thursday 29, the day before the honoris causa, the researcher Ignacio Cirac will be the chief guest of the Excellence Meeting that will be held at the Universitat de València. In this meeting, Cirac will give the lecture “Quantum simulators” (Simuladores cuánticos), at 16:00 in Room Charles Darwin in Burjassot Campus of the Universitat de València.

Professor Cirac's research focuses on quantum information theory, which has developed a computer system based on quantum mechanics that allows, in the future, much faster algorithms design and make the most efficient and secure communications.

The Meetings of International Excellence are an initiative of the Campus of International Excellence (CEI by its Spanish initials) VLC /CAMPUS and funded within the program CEI promoted by the Ministry of Education, Culture and Sports. The aim of these programs is to encourage annual talent through conferences, meetings and dialogues of Nobel prizes and excellent scientists with research students in the areas of specialisation of the CEI.
