Two names stand out this year in the traditional Christmas Concert which the University Orpheus of Valencia will give next 23 December at 20:00 in the Palau de la Música: Marc Antoine Charpentier and Rafael Armengol. El món canta davant d’un bressol (The world sings in front of a cradle), which celebrates its 55th edition, is announced this year in a very special way: billboard images have been made by the Valencian artist Rafael Armengol.

Messe de minuit pour noël of this French composer is the first main part of the concert El món canta davant d’un bressol. This work, one of the eleven mass which Charpentier composed during his life, has a close bond with popular celebration of Christmas because most of its acts are based in French popular carol melodies.

Moreover, the first part of the concert is completed by the performance of different acts of Messiah of Haendel, while in the second part, as usual, the Orpheus give to Valencian audience a musical tour from the most close feelings (Arvo Pärt, Rakhmàninov) and hopeful (Pau Casals) to listen how the traditional joy of these times sounds with traditional carols along with carols of all around the world.

This year, in the 55th edition El món canta davant d’un bressol, music and painting come together in the billboard where this act is announced. The artist has chosen a work of the series that he composed about renacentist angels of the Cathedral of Valencia. “It had to be something related with music and we thought that this picture was the most similar to a Christmas image” Armengol says.

This way, Rafael Armengol joins the artistic project of the University Orpheus of Valencia, which pretends to establish bonds with Valencian artists -renowned or bright young hopes- and link music area, the University Orpheus, with other artistic areas of Valencian culture, in such a way it turns into a model of complementarity of different artistic disciplines. “The Orpheus, being conscious of its importance in cultural area since fifties, pretends to contribute in a solid way to Valencian society for it can enjoy of a healthy artistic education, because we think that cultured people are tolerant, fair and happy people”, Francesc Valldecabres, director of this choir group, states.

Ramón pastor, Valencian composer, started this innovative proposal of this artistic house. The University Orpheus of Valencia premiered last July during the Serenates Festival, which took place in La Nau of the Universitat de València, its work Coloraina and recently Ab urbe condita, some piece based in the texts of Tito Livio about the foundation of Rome.
