The University Philharmonic Orchestra and the Fecocova Choir interpret ‘Requiem’ by Fauré, at the Palau de la Música

University Philharmonic Orchestra and Fecocova Chorus.

After a first collaboration with the women’s section of the Choir of The Choirs’ Federation of the Valencian Country (Fecocova) in January 2010, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Valencia and the whole Fecocova Choir, directed by Josep Ramon Gil-Tàrrega, meet again next 16 April at the Palau de la Música of Valencia to offer, this time, two representative pieces of the French composer Gabriel Fauré (1845-1924).

The concert will take place at 20:00 at the Iturbi Room of the Valencian auditorium. The Requiem in ‘D minor’, opus 48, and the Pavana, opus 50, are two of the most listened compositions for choir and orchestra in concert halls. Taking advantage of the commemoration of the 90th anniversary for the death of Fauré, one of the great French composers of the second half of the XIX century, the two groups will offer a concert where the music of this composer is the protagonist, since it will open and close the audition, and where the Requiem, particularly, takes on special significance taking into account that the concert takes place in full Easter. The piece includes the participation of two renowned solo voices, soprano Marta Mathéu and baritone Vicente Antequera.

The Pavana which is heard in this concert, particularly the Opus 50, is a piece composed for orchestra and choir by Gabriel Fauré in 1887, and along with his Requiem of the second part, they are pieces with a certain religious inspiration alienated from any drama and they have been widely used in film industry and advertising.

The music of Fauré, sensual a retailer, will have a counterpoint with the Concert for oboe and strings of the English composer Ralph Vaughan Williams (1872-1958). His works follow the suggestive and voluptuous leads of the French musicians as well as introduce a significant nationalist component as other English artists do at that time. This time it has also a young solo artist of great renown, José M. Ferrero, former member of the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Valencia which is currently studying at Mannheim.

In short, the Philharmonic Orchestra of the University of Valencia offers again an attractive concert, which involves, apart from the orchestra and the Fecocova choir, several high-level solo artists who enrich once again the musical programming of the Valencia city. Tickets can be purchased at the Palau box offices and at www.entradas.com (from 8 to 15 euros).
