The University of Valencia was born more than five centuries ago by agreement of the Juries of the city of Valencia. Since then, the University has carried out its activities at the service of the valencian society.
The report “La contribución socioeconómica de las Universidades Públicas de la Comunidad Valenciana” (The socioeconomic contribution of the Public Universities of the Valencian Community) evidences the contribution of the Valencian University Public System, and of the University of Valencia in particular, to the economic growth and the social development in our territory.
The University of Valencia is presently a modern european university open to all the areas of knowledge: basic and experimental sciences, engineering, health sciences, educational sciences, humanities and social, economic and legal sciences.
Undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, but also some other postgraduate courses, programmes for the elderly, children, and young people are part of a training offer aimed to all ages.
Together with teaching, cutting-edge research is a fundamental activity for our University. A research both basic and applied that, through our knowledge transfer programmes, becomes a key factor for our productive sectors, contributing to making R+D becomes a source of competitive advance in our territory.
The generation and spread of culture and science are part, together with solidarity and international cooperation and the compromise with our language, culture, heritage and environmental sustainability, of the activities of an institution such as ours that projects itself further away from the university campuses over all the territory, contributing to its dynamic and development.
If today our university can show with pride a leading position at a state and international level, being leader in hosting Erasmus students and a role model in scientific production is due to the major effort carried out through years by all the people who make up the university community.
Their constant work make, day after day, the university activity a reality.
This work should be aimed to the achievement of a set of common objectives that contribute to continuing fulfill, as we do since 1499, the mission of this university: serve to its people and its territory.
The Strategic Plan is a key document: it leads the way that we have decided, together as university community, to walk through the next years in order to continue being a model institution for our people.
Furthermore, it collects the objectives of efficiency and effectiveness due to the people as the public institution we are, managing the resources that the Public Administrations put within our grasp to accomplish a set of objectives for an increased social wellbeing.
The results of the previous Strategic Plan of the University (2008-2011) are a clear reminder of the achievement of some objectives and, at the same time, a source of encouragement to continue working in a rigorous, planned, in agreement and evaluated.

I invite you to know and work to make the second Strategic Plan of the University (2012-2015) a reality.

A plan made up thanks to the work and effort of the university community, to their reflections and far-sighted approach for this University that, more than five centuries before its foundation, continues being a young and innovative university.

Thanks to everyone for making, day after day, this institution, the University of Valencia, a reality.

Principal of the University of Valencia
