“The banal principle: concerning now and here”

Conference by Salvador Rubio from University of Murcia

The Josep Lluís Blasco Estellés Chair for Philosophy and Citizenship has organised the XII cycle of conferences named “La Banalitat com a misteri”

Current life seems to experience a steady increase in purely considering the superficial appearance of things. Everything is about fast consumption and little effort, epidemic. The overabundance of stimulation and information seems to involve the desire of a fast, constant and passive fruition. Sometimes the wrap attracts us more than the material that should contain and it even replaces it. All of this affects the culture, the principles, and the human relations and in all of this, new technologies and social networks play a very important role. Instantaneousness and urgency attracts and seduces us, imposes itself on our way of life. As there is no time, it seems that there is only time to banalities and the meaning of our lives and its mystery is on banalities.

The banality is against depth, against important things. However, what does it mean important or depth once we have renounced to great stories of religion or history? Which conception of time -and space- invites in one way or another of being or living? Which is the relation between what is important and what goes viral in social networks? Is not it banal the search of depth? Isn’t depth a relic or a vestige of an extinct way of life? Or should we make an effort to recover from the loss or even, of the loss of sense of loss?
