Català, Full University Professor of Audiovisual Communication of the UAB. “El cine de pensamiento. Formas de la imaginación técnico-estética” (The cinema of thought. Forms of techno-aesthetic imagination) coordinated by Josep M. Català and co-published by the UAB, UPF, UJI and UV . The volume brings together a group of essays on the alliance between thought and image in movement. The image in movement opened a new system of visual representation. His birth involved an audio-visual rhetoric that exceeded the limits of the classical film language, encouraging thus the development of original thoughts. This volume presents a series of approaches to different aspects of the cinema phenomenon, from the avant-garde practices to the filmmakers related to film essays, such as Herzog, Farocki or Rossellini, to the analysis of territories connected with memory or popular cinema. Through these approaches, the different aspects of cinematographic thought are covered. “Estética del ensayo. La forma ensayo, de Montaigne a Godard” (Aesthetics of the essay. The essay form, from Montaigne to Godard) by Josep M. Català Català reflects on film-essay, a sub-product which has been tirelessly created since Montaigne’s century and which has been captured in those introductory writing exercises such as personal diaries, self-portraits and epistolary exercises, autobiographies, essays. From an investigation in the specific rhetorical devices of literary essays, the specific meaning of documentary film is analysed, in the general characteristics of essay forms and in the relation between images and thought. This volume includes an analysis of the works of filmmakers who, for the author are especially significant.
