Member of the Royal Spanish Academy (seat k) since 2002. He is the deputy director of the institution and the editor of the Nuevo diccionario histórico de la lengua española (New Historical Dictionary of the Spanish language). He is also member of the Institut d’Estudis Catalans (Institute for Catalan Studies) (1997).
