The answer to patriarchy structural violence, debated at the University on the occasion of the 25 of November

On the on the occasion of the 25 of November, International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women, the Universitat de València organised on Wednesday an institutional act that will start with a complaint performance against gender-based violence in charge of Taiat Dansa, in collaboration with students of the University, at 11:50 at the Plaza Darwin of the Office of the Principal. Then, there will be a five minutes silence gathering and the principal Esteban Morcillo will read a manifesto in favour of equality.

At 12:00 it is summoned the five minutes silence gathering outside the Office of the Principal. Then, at the Assembly Hall, the principal will read the manifesto that, on the occasion of the commemoration of the 25 of November, has been written by the Red de Unidades de Igualdad de Género para la Excelencia Universitaria (RUIGEU). Immediately, the principal will announce the call of the 2ns award “Olga Quiñones Fernández”, started last year, which presents two modalities for Degree Final Projects (TFG) and Master's Year Degree Final Projects (TFM) that include the gender perspective and promote equality.

At 12:30, the Constitutional Law professor of the University of Córdoba Carmen Calvo, ex minister for Culture and prominent feminist, will give the conference “La violencia estructural del patriarcado. ¿Quién responde?” (The patriarchy structural violence. Who answers?) Carmen Calvo points out “that the basis of power doesn’t implies violence, essential structure of the patriarchy, that is manifested in many ways and that uses al the masculine structures over the female ones. Its maximum expression is the gender-based violence that, in occasions, ends up with the murder of women by men”. In her opinion, the institutional answer to this serious problem is still superficial, it doesn’t  have the appropriate intentions and means to dismantle the background of the secularly created structures. And this is, according to the professor Calvo conclusions, the reason why terrorist violence against women it is not truly faced.

After the talk, the director of the Equality Unit of the Universitat de València, Amparo Mañés, will present the institutional campaign for the prevention of gender-based violence addressed to students, that includes the launch of audio-visual pills in order to make gender stereotypes visible; the dissemination of the warded videos at the 9th edition of the Equality Short-films International Contest and the presentation of the short-film “Tú no me la pegues” (Don’t put over on me), in charge of Begoña Pozo, a collection of the warded short stories at the last editions of the Audio-visual Short-stories Contest of the Faculty of Language Studies, Translation and Communication of the University.

The Vice-principal for Culture and Equality Antonio Ariño will close the act.
