The Faculty of Philosophy and Education Sciences, with the support of the SEDI, will organise the I Philosophical Essay Contest Universitat de València this year. It is an initiative coming from its student body, through the Representative Assembly, and which in this edition it will examine the subject of “Philosophy and Atheism”.
The participants must be enrolled in the Degree in Philosophy and must present their essays with a maximum of three thousand words. Deadline for essay submissions is up to 11th May. For more information, click here you can also write to adrfiloeduc@gmail.com. There is a 1,000 € award for the winning entry, and awards of two-hundred euros for the four finalist essays.
Even though it counts on a general thematic framework, it is the intention of the committee of the organization to give every participant all the freedom of expression in their works, encouraging at the same time originality and guaranteeing the plurality of points of view.
Besides encouraging the interdepartmental collaboration and the interaction between professors and student body, the contest is willing to obtain high levels in the quality of the presented works. To that end, the evolved entities in its organisation also offer an award of two-hundred euros for the last four finalist works and one thousand euros for the winning proposal. The valuation of the participant essays will be carried out by an initial process of correcting in pairs, in double-blind conditions, in order to finally arrive to the jury’s hands made of the teaching staff and one student of Higher Studies who will be in charge of choosing the winning proposal.
The proposed topic for the elaboration of the essays, “Philosophy and Atheism”, is looking to deal a maximum issue related to our society nowadays with a philosophical perspective. Taking a glance at the historical development of these two dimensions of human culture, we can observe a long tradition of interrelation, either in the form of a bloody confrontation and mutual co-operation. Both this complex shared story and the present necessity to examine the role of religion in our society are what inspired the jury to discuss about this topic. At the same time, the explicit inclusion of atheism expects such works to deal with this matter specially which, with no doubts, become very invigorating from a philosophical point of view.
