Environment and Sustainable Economy in L’Albufera to be debated in Sollana by UV teaching staff

The Cultural Centre of Sollana has been headquarters of the conference ‘Medioambiente y Economía Sostenible’ (Environment and Sustainable Economy). Professors Mª Àngels Ull (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology), Javier García and Amparo Vilches (Department of Experimental and Social Sciences Teaching) addressed environmental sustainability from different perspectives and tried to outline a sustainable development sample for L' Albufera.

Vice-principal Jorge Hermosilla Pla; Sollana’s Mayor, José Vicente Codoñer Senón; and José Luis Pellicer, representative of IMELSA, inaugurated this lecture series organised by the City Council of this town and the Office of the Vice-principal for Territorial Projection and Participation of the UV, in collaboration with IMELSA.

Then, Professor Amparo Vilches Peña (Department of Experimental and Social Sciences Teaching), delivered a lecture in where she explained those huge problems linked and which must be holistically solved. “It is necessary a transition to sustainability that entails changing form a brown economy based on competitiveness, to a green economy based on solidary cooperation; it is vital to achieve a plenty democratic governance which respects the three generations of human rights; there needs to be a transition from hyper consumption to a more responsible and solidary consumption; an energetic transition is also required; an ecologic agriculture; a reliable promotion of environmental education; and above all implicating citizens through citizenship participation”, pointed out the professor.

Thereupon, Mª Angels Ull Solís (Department of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology) focused her speech on the Natural Park L’ Albufera and shared with the attendants a study for the sustainable development of this Park. “The suitable environmental conceptual model for L’ Albufera goes from the maintenance of rice crops through sustainable practice, recovering of characteristic spaces and improving the fishing resource”, explained the Professor.

Finally, the Full University Professor Javier García Gómez (Department of Experimental and Social Sciences) emphasised the importance of citizen participation in the development of local Agenda 21, which means the need to foster environmental education. The professor explained that in the local scope of Sollana has been prepared a huge quantity of teaching material related to the Natural Park of L’Albufera, and stressed the possibility of starting up an ecomuseum in Sollana as a social revitalizing of the locality.

The conference finished with a debate between the lecturers and the public, the debate tackled the issue on straw burning in the process of rice collecting; therefore, among the outcomes of the meeting was arranged the holding of a debate forum which addresses this issue in a greater depth. With these and other initiatives, the Office of the Vice-principal for Territorial Projection and Participation consolidates the collaboration among local public entities, city councils, local socioeconomic stakeholders and UV researchers.
