The future of co-development, a debate in the framework of the Càtedra UNESCO of Universitat

The Development Studies UNESCO´s Chair of Universitat de València-South-North board organises, together with the research group of InMIDE, the days of “Discussing the future of the development. Visions and experiences from institutions, immigrants associations and the NGOs”, which will take place at the Assembly Hall of the Faculty of Social Sciences on 21st and 22nd May.

According to professor Joan Lacomba, the coordinator of these days, “the aim is to reflect upon the possible ways for the future in relation to the role of the immigrants associations in the development of their original societies”. Therefore, in this academic meeting some entities will take part, as well as immigrants associations from several countries and Spanish NGOs.

On Thursday 21st, at 10h, the Director of the Càtedra UNESCO and executive president of the South-North board, José Miguel Soriano, and professor Lacomba, as the coordinator of the announcement will start the days. Then, Alexis Cloquell, from the InMIDE Group, will show the results of the study titled “Diasporas and co-development from Spain. The role of the immigrants associations for the development of the countries de origin”, R&D&I project directed by Joan Lacomba between 2012 and 2014, and sponsored by Ministry of Science and Technology.

At 11h, a panel discussion comprised of technicians of different entities will be celebrated. The following people will take part in this event: Fernando Falomir, responsible of the area of co-development of the Ceimigra Foundation; Felipe Llamas, responsible of the Andalusian Fund of Municipalities for International Solidarity (FAMSI); Rafael Crespo, a member of the research group and Action with the Cultural Minorities (GRAMC); and Cristina Saiz, a technician in International Co-operation of the City Council of Lleida.

A second debate (15:30 h) will close the first conference. In the evening, the immigrants associations like Amazán Association (Morocco), ATIM La Rioja (Morocco), Acolvalle (Colombia), Ecuador Etxea (Ecuador) and Resortissants de Guetala (Mali).

The conference of Friday, 22nd May, will start at 10h with a panel discussion where the following ones will have a debate: the outskirts NGOs, MUSOL (Municipalities for Solidarity and Institutional Strengthening), FADE Foundation (Fundación Ayuda Desarrollo Educación, which means Help Foundation Education Development) and Afriwater Network.

A photographic exhibition on the projects of the associations which take part will complete these days. The sample will stay open throughout the week in the Faculty of Social Sciences.

Free inscription to the days and deadline is 21st May. The enrolled people will receive a certificate of assistance.

The days are organised by the Development Studies UNESCO´s Chair and InMIDE, Research Group in Migration and Development, directed by Joan Lacomba, professor of the Department of Social Work at Universitat de València. The research of this group is centred in the bonds between migratory mobility and the development processes in different countries and contexts.

During these days, South-North Board of the General Foundation of Universitat de València and the Faculty of Social Sciences will collaborate.
