Gustau Camps-Valls, honoured by the IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society

Gustau Camps-Valls

The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society has just proclaimed “Distinguished Lecturer” the physicist of the UV Gustau Camps-Valls for his contribution to the development of algorithms for the analysis of data related to remote sensing, Earth observation and geoscience and for his role in the promotion of this field among the worldwide scientific community.

Camps-Valls belongs to the Department of Electronic Engineering of the UV and leads the group «Image and Signal Processing» of the Laboratory of Image Processing (LIP) in the Science Park of the academic institution.

The IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Society (http://www.grss-ieee.org/) has just proclaimed “Distinguished Lecturer” the physicist Gustau Camps-Valls, from the Department of Electronic Engineering and leader of the group «Image and Signal Processing» of the Laboratory of Image Processing (LIP) of the UV. He is one of the three honoured lecturers in 2016 by this professional society of experts in Remote Sensing, Geoscience and Earth observation, which counts on approximately 5000 members in 100 countries.

The programme “IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing: Distinguished Lecturer” has as its main objectives to spread progress and advances in the field of remote sensing and make the international scientific community aware of them. The programme gives support to the regional and state chapters of all around the world making lecturers who can inspire and stimulate new researchers available for them.

The contributions of Gustau Camps-Valls focus on the development of automatic learning algorithms for the analysis of data of remote sensing, Earth Observation and geoscience. He has written 120 articles in magazines and 20 international chapters of books and he has given more than 150 lectures. He is also editor of several international books related to signal processing, data and automatic learning processes. He has a h=48 index. He began to belong to the ISI list of highly quoted researchers in 2011 and Thomson Reuters ScienceWatch said that one of his works was leader in research. In 2015 he was awarded the prestigious European Research Council (ERC) Consolidator Grant to advance in the statistical learning of Earth observing data.

Gustau Camps-Valls has been member of the consultant scientific team of the next satellite MTG-IRS of EUMETSAT and associated editor of the magazines IEEE Transactions on Signal Processing, IEEE Signal Processing Letters, IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Letters, IEEE Selected Topics in Signal Processing and IEEE Geoscience and Remote Sensing Magazine. With the «Distinguished Lecturer» award of the IEEE GRS Society, the scientist will impart a master class on advanced treatment of data and machine learning all around the world.
