Jose Miguel Soriano, new executive president of the Patronat Sud-Nord and director of the UNESCO chair of the University of Valencia

Professor Jose Miguel Soriano del Castillo, delegate for the Principal for Cooperation of the University of Valencia has been appointed executive president of the Patronat Sud-Nord and director of Development Studies UNESCO’s Chair. Soriano substitutes Guillermo Palao in his position, current vice-principal of Internationalization and Cooperation.

As maximum responsible of the Patronat Sud-Nord of the General Foundation of the University of Valencia, Jose Miguel Soriano represents the University in the Work Group of Cooperation to Development of the Xarxa Vives d’Universitats; coordinates the UNESCO chairs of Studies on the Development of the University of Valencia in the headquarters of UNESCO from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Cooperation; he represents the Trust in the Valencian Coordinator of ONGD; he is a member of the Commission of Solidary Programs with the Third World ‘Una Nau de Solidaritat – Comissió 0,7’ and is a delegate by the University of Valencia in the Monitoring Commission of the Inter-University Convention with the Valencian Funds for Solidarity.


Jose Miguel Soriano del Castillo is a tenured lecturer of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Public Health, where he teaches diet therapy and nutrition in emergency situations. He is doctor with extraordinary price by the University of Valencia (2003) and has done educational and researches in the la Agence Française de Sécurité Sanitaire des Aliments, the Istituto Superiore di Sanità (Italy), the National Research Center (Egypt), the Akershus University College (Norway), the Universidad Nacional de La Plata (Argentina), the Instituto Nacional Materno-Perinatal (Peru) and the El Salvador University.


He has published five books, fifty book chapters and over a hundred of articles in national and international magazines. He has received several awards, among them, the price for Investigation of the Institute of Egg Studies (2004), the Award of the Non-Profit Educational Association ‘Profesor Vicente Callao’ of the Iberoamerican Pharmacy Academy (2004), the 9th Award ‘Valencia se solidariza’ in the modality Grant for Social Research in Valencia’s Town Hall (2008), the Excellence in Education Prize of the Council for Education- Consell Social de la Universitat de Valencia (2009) and the Cascajares Award for young researchers of the Food Microbiology Group of the Spanish Society for Microbiology (2010).


Professor Soriano is, moreover, director of the University Clinic of Nutrition, Physical Activity and Physiotherapy of the Luis Alcanyis Fondation; director of the Observatory of Nutrition and Alimentary Security for the Developing World-University of Valencia; and has done his labor on matters of child-nutrition in Saharawi and Chernobil refugee camps, as well as on alimentary security in ready-to-eat foods in Egypt. He has been responsible for the creation and implementation of the first mother’s own milk bank in Lima (Peru).


Within the last few years, he has developed and directed several projects with the Patronat Sud-Nord and the UNESCO chair: from professional qualification courses on health topics for European programs or the new international agenda for development, to initiatives like nutritional guides for vulnerable groups of population, and the formulation of projects on mother’s own milk bank. Additionally, he represents the UNESCO chair of the University as an institutional associate in the Spanish Network on Developmental Studies.
