The López Piñero Institute for the History of Medicine and Science (joint centre of the CSIC and the University of Valencia), based at the Palacio de Cerveró, opens today Thursday, 20 December, at 20:00, the permanent exhibition Colección científico-médica de la Universitat de València, 1. Ciencia y sociedad (Medical-scientific collection of the University of Valencia, 1. Science and society), organised by the Office of the Vice-principal for Culture and Equality of the University and the institute itself. The inauguration will be attended by Esteban Morcillo, principal of the University, Antonio Ariño, Vice-principal for Culture and Equality, José Pío Beltrán, institutional coordinator of the CSIC in Valencia, and the scientific committee in charge of the exhibition, consisting of José Ramón Bertomeu Sánchez, Ximo Guillem Llobat, Àlvar Martínez Vidal and Pedro Ruiz-Castell, all of them researchers at the institute. The exhibition features works from the collection of scientific and medical instruments of the University of Valencia, as well as material from its bibliographical heritage and audiovisual documents. The visit begins with a solar camera from the University’s Observatory (1935) and ends with the X-ray diffraction equipment (1956-1957). Open questions The exhibition presents visitors with a series of open questions that articulate the discourse and allow us to explore different topics related to the production of knowledge and scientific-medical practice. The issues raised are an invitation to reflect on how medicine, science and technology have participated in the transformation processes of modern societies, while posing a critical way to address current problems. First, it deals with the difficulty of defining science professionals and the importance of the contributions of amateur scientists. Then, with the power relations between the experts and the uninitiated, which highlights the role of the knowledge of experts in the development of modern societies through the links with justice, public health and management risk. Furthermore, it shows how the development of scientific activity incorporates political, ideological and social overtones. It also delves into the question of how the constant presence of various diseases among the Valencian population (leprosy, malaria…) has mobilised all the available resources. Finally, it highlights how gender-based exclusion has manifested through the devaluation of the activities undertaken primarily by women, as well as the difficulties they have experienced in their professionalisation. The exhibition Colección científico-médica de la Universitat de València is divided into two thematic exhibitions. The first one opens today under the title 1. Ciencia y sociedad, and will be open to the public Monday to Friday from 9:00 to 20:00 in the exhibition hall at the Palacio de Cerveró (Plaza Cisneros, 4, Valencia. Tours Phone: 96 386 49 22). The second thematic exhibition, titled 2. Medicina y Sociedad (2. Medicine and Society), will be presented at the Faculty of Medicine of the University, during the first quarter of 2019.
