Today Friday 24 February, the Research Institute on Social Welfare Policy, Polibienestar, organises the first international conference on ‘Young entrepreneurs in the social and common good economy.’ The conferences will take place from 9:00 in the lecture room 2P04 of the Department of Applied Economics. The conference is directed and coordinated by the researcher of Polibienestar and professor of the Department of Applied Economics, Antonia Sajardo.

In the conference, experts from the academic field and from the business world ‘will use their knowledge and experience to show to the young people from the Universitat de València another method of doing business which incorporates an essential and valuable social component to the traditional perspective exclusively linked to economic profitability’.

The conference analyses the contribution of the primitive structures of social economics such as the cooperatives, the mutual societies and the associations to the quality and stable job, to the correction of social inequalities and to the general interest problem solving. It also analyses the new initiatives of social entrepreneurship and social enterprise. Together with this, the significance of the business projects of the economic model called ‘of common good’ as a current challenge for the young entrepreneurship is also studied. The professor Sajardo explains that both structures ‘represent another approach to doing business which puts the counterpoint to the dominant economic model and which opt for fairer, more ethical and more united societies where the individual is the ultimate goal of the system rather than a means to achieve it’.

The conferences are completed with the presentation of two significant European projects devoted to the encouragement of the young social entrepreneur and to the analysis of the resistance of the labour markets. These presentations will be made by the consultancy Ibox and the Polibienestar Institute.

The conference will be open by Francisco Álvarez, the general manager for Economics, Entrepreneurship and Cooperativism of the Council for Sustainable Economy, Productive Areas, Commerce and Labour; by Jorge Garcés, Director of Polibienestar and Príncipe de Asturias Professor at Georgetown University and by Raúl Contreras, responsible of Social Innovation and Solidarity Economics of the Fundación Las Naves.

Polibienestar is a Universitat de València’s research institute. It is specialised in the field of social policies, both in basic and applied research and in innovation, social technology, technical advising and training.
