The Serenates festival gathers over 5,000 people in its eleven concerts

Actuación de Serenates 2014 en el Claustro de La Nau.

The Serenates festival, organized by the University of Valencia in collaboration with CulturArts in the University’s Cultural Centre of La Nau, ended its 2014 edition on 7 July with an undeniable success in terms of public as it has filled the University’s Claustro’s capacity.

This edition has counted with a public of over 5,000 people in a festival that, during eleven nights, has offered Valencian society a possibility to enjoy, freely, of concerts with an evident quality.

This results show that this project, which has completed this year its 34th edition, has been gradually consolidating both public wise (in the past edition 3,916 people attended) as well as with regards to the collaborators, among which we find the Valencian Palau de la Musica, the Valencian Town Hall (Youth Council), the Sabadell Bank, Heineken’s group’s Cruzcampo Fundation, the General Foundation of the University of Valencia and Valencia’s EASD (Arts School and Superior Design).

The series closed last 7, July with the total premiere of the pocket opera ‘El mal vino’, ordered by CulturArts, with Jesus Salvador Chapi’s music (from Amores Grup de Percussio) and with a libretto and scenic direction by Paco Zarzoso. It constituted an absolute success due to the celebration of Grup Amores’ 25th anniversary.

This premiere fits within Serenate’s action framework that, during its more than three decades of history, has been to place of release of several works or has brought back from the oblivion pieces from the Valencian musical archives. Additionally, it has served as stage for many Valencian musicians’ debut acting as a platform for their promotion and diffusion.

This year’s edition has gathered an eclectic programming, with more concerts than ever (a total of eleven) and of many different music styles, from the Renaissance to the release of contemporary works as well as all classes of musical formations.

This programming has counted with the presence of renowned singers such as Maria del Mar Bonet, accompanied by the University of Valencia Philharmonic Orquestra or the singer-songwriter Amancio Prada.

Valencian choral world has been latent with the programming of three concerts in the hands of the Cor de la Generalitat Valencia, the Orfeo Universitari de Valencia and the Pequeños Cantores de Valencia, formation which celebrates its fiftieth anniversary.

Percussion has also been a protagonist in this year’s concert of the Percussion Section of the University of Valencia Philharmonic Orchestra.

In addition, chamber music has been represented in three different ways: a Renaissance music concert headed by Capella de Ministrers, a tribute concert to Astor Piazzola interpreted by the group ZingerSeptet and a monographic concert of Manuel Palau’s piano pieces interpreted by Bartomeu Jaume.

Moreover, the big concert of the Valencian Orchestra, done in collaboration with musicians from the University of Valencia Philharmonic Orchestra and which was directed by the director of the latter one, Hilari Garcia, a clear example of collaboration between the organizing bodies of this festival.
